A stay in Inn-Salzach can be shaped around urban history, river landscapes and seasonal activities. In Burghausen, highlights include a town museum and the Salzach Gorge; Mühldorf offers exhibitions on the Nazi era and the Inn, as well as a nature trail. Outdoor activities include walks through floodplain forests, activities at Lake Wöhrsee and a beer hike.

Museums telling the story of the town and river

At the Burghausen Town Museum, children and adults can experience life at a medieval princely court and the history of Burghausen—from the earliest traces of human life to the present day. Numerous interactive and listening stations make the museum especially interesting for children and school students. The natural environment of the Salzach and Lake Wöhrsee is also among the topics covered: research stations explain the Salzach River habitat and the surrounding floodplain forests, beech-covered slopes and the Salzachdurchbruch “Burghauer Enge.”

The Mühldorf History Centre and Museum focuses on different topics. The permanent exhibition “Everyday Life, Armaments, Extermination” explores the district’s past during the Nazi era. The exhibition “Lifeline Inn” looks at the relationship between people and the river: it shows how people have lived with the Inn and how we interact with it today. The same museum thus focuses both on regional history during the Nazi era and on how the relationship with the river has changed.

Nature trails and seasonal activities

The Innaue Nature Experience Trail features eleven interactive stations. It connects the town of MĂĽhldorf a. Inn with the local recreation area south of the Inn and introduces visitors to the cycle of nature. In the Alz floodplain forest, the Klosterau Forest Adventure Trail leads through the woods. Its stations include a listening tower for hearing native birds and a jungle trail where you can spot native wildlife.

The Salzach Gorge between Burghausen and Hochburg-Ach reveals another side of the river landscape. Since the last Ice Age, the Salzach has carved a gorge about 70 metres deep into the Flinz sand. Caves in the impressive steep slope are home to Aesculapian snakes, jackdaws, bats and eagle owls.

The activities available at Lake Wöhrsee depend on the season: in summer, you can swim and go boating. When the lake is frozen, ice skating and curling are listed as activities; conditions for using the ice may vary. If you plan to take part in these winter activities, check conditions before your visit.

Beer culture on foot or on a circular route

On the beer pilgrimage to Altötting, you walk from brewery to brewery and discover the beers of the Inn-Salzach region. Check the dates in advance. Another option is the Beer Garden Tour, a 52.5-kilometre cultural themed route that forms a circular loop through Altötting, Unterneukirchen, Mörmoosen, Tüßling, Polling, Mühldorf a. Inn, Erharting, Winhöring and Neuötting. The beer pilgrimage focuses on breweries and regional beers, while the Beer Garden Tour is defined by its circular route and the towns it passes through.
