Schauenstein can be explored through a variety of themes: two museums in the castle showcase the region’s craft and fire service history. The townscape is shaped by the ensemble of the castle, church and market square; on its return route, the Aubachgrund Trail OS 21 passes through the town and by notable landmarks. Exhibitions, architectural history and landscape thus offer different starting points for a stay.
Museums in the castle: craft and fire service history
The Municipal Local History Museum in Schauenstein Castle showcases typical regional trades of earlier times: a bakery, shoemaker’s shop, home weaving workshop, carpentry shop, tailor’s shop and barber shop. The exhibition also gives an impression of how people lived in the past. A rich collection of regional minerals and rocks complements these insights. Anyone interested in everyday life will find several aspects of regional history brought together here—from living and working to geological specimens.
The Upper Franconian Fire Service Museum is also housed in the castle. Its focus is the technical development of the fire service and the historical tradition of Hof district. The exhibits include a hand-operated fire pump dating from 1855. The museum uses around 600 square meters of exhibition space in the castle. Unlike the local history museum, its thematic focus is on technology and fire service history, not on trades and living spaces.
Castle, market square and church
The ensemble of the castle, church and market square in Schauenstein has remained unchanged for almost 500 years. At the same time, the history of the houses on the market square tells of a turning point: they were rebuilt after the great fire of 1865. The fire destroyed 95 houses as well as 93 barns and outbuildings. The town’s history thus brings together long-preserved structures and reconstruction after extensive destruction.
St. Bartholomew’s Church also preserves a specific historical detail: its baptismal font was installed in 1754. Those interested in individual architectural and decorative features can look beyond the ensemble as a whole to an object with a known date. The castle, church and market square form Schauenstein’s historic ensemble.
On the Aubachgrund Trail OS 21
On its return to Schauenstein, the Aubachgrund Trail OS 21 crosses the listed Lehsten Bridge. The return route through the town also passes the park with the Wachende Jungfrau, the market square and the castle.
The Wachende Jungfrau is a rock formation overlooking the Selbitz and part of a small municipal park. The route thus adds a landscape feature to the historic town center. The park and rock formation offer a different focus from the collections in the castle: here, the emphasis is on the local landscape and the layout of the park; there, on crafts, living spaces and fire service history.
Another glimpse of Neudorf
In Neudorf, which belongs to Schauenstein, the Weaver’s House Museum preserves a typical smallholder’s and craftsman’s house from the eastern Franconian Forest. It is furnished largely as it was during the lifetime of Karl Wolfrum (1879–1964). The house complements the museum exhibits in the castle with a concrete example of living and working in a historic building. This offers different ways to explore the past: collections on regional occupations and history in the castle, and a largely period-furnished house in Neudorf.
If you are planning a museum visit, check the seasonal opening information in advance. This is relevant for the Municipal Local History Museum, the Upper Franconian Fire Service Museum and the Weaver’s House Museum in Neudorf. This will help you fit the exhibitions and other places you visit into your stay.
