The Hirschhügel Trail US 32 makes its route through Obersteben particularly clear. It leaves Bad Steben along the road to Obersteben, passes through the entire village and turns right shortly before the edge of the village. From there, the route leads to the watershed trail and on to Friedelhöhe. It offers expansive distant and panoramic views for almost the entire way. If you choose routes based on their course, you will find a complete crossing of the village here, continuing on to two named waypoints.

Hiking trails and views at Frankenwarte

Frankenwarte lies on the 679 m-high Hirschhügel between Bad Steben and Geroldsgrün. The Jungbrunnen Trail HRW 1 reaches it; it is also accessible via various hiking trails. From the lookout, the panoramic view extends to the surrounding heights of the Höllental, Lichtenberg and Bad Steben. Along US 32, expansive views characterize almost the entire route; on HRW 1, Frankenwarte is a named destination. The practical planning features are therefore distinct: panoramic scenery along the route or a lookout point as the destination.

Two hiking trails, different planning features

The Silla Trail US 33 is 12.9 km long and rated easy. Together with the expansive views on US 32, this gives you two different points of reference when choosing a tour: for the Silla Trail, you can go by its stated length and rating; for the Hirschhügel Trail, the views along almost the entire route are a notable feature. The trails therefore have different emphases, without requiring you to apply the same criteria to both.

The Silla site and its history

The Silla site between Langenbach and Obersteben is associated with a former chapel. On a former church path, a mound with a well rises in a meadow. The links to the chapel and church path, along with the mound and well, offer a historical perspective on the area, distinct from the viewpoints along the hiking trails. If you are interested in local history, this connection offers a topic of its own alongside the routes to Frankenwarte and Friedelhöhe.

Cycling through Obersteben and to Frankenwarte

E-Bike Tour 1, “A taste of the Hölle,” follows the road through Obersteben and then returns to the outskirts of Bad Steben. Beyond Obersteben, it follows Route No. 5 of the Bad Steben bike network. A regional cycling tour offers a different emphasis: it leads to Obersteben, past colorful meadows and to Frankenwarte with its panoramic views; the return route runs through Seifengrund to Bad Steben. When planning a cycling trip, you can choose between a described ride through the village connected to the bike network and a tour featuring meadows, a lookout point and a return route through Seifengrund.

Landscape and orientation on site

The Obersteben–Schwedenwacht–Friedelhöhe landscape is of particular importance for nature-based recreation. This fits with the recurring references to the expansive views along the Hirschhügel Trail and its continuation towards Friedelhöhe. Tommy´s beer garden is in the Obersteben district of Bad Steben; it has a trampoline and a football field. As well as hiking and cycling routes, these specific features of a place to visit can help you find your way around the village.
