Ulrich Church is a tangible cultural landmark in Aichen. The “Ulrich Churches between the Wertach and Kammel” cycling pilgrimage route passes through the village to the church. If you plan to take the route, check the current practical details in the route description before setting off.

Ulrich Church: History and Imagery

Different construction periods and decorative details can be distinguished at Ulrich Church. The choir of the late Gothic church dates essentially from the 15th century. The nave and tower date from 1727; the interior frescoes were created when the church was built. The gallery paintings depict episodes from the life of Saint Ulrich. The altars are also part of a later phase of furnishing: they were created in 1883, including an Ulrich altar on the left. The connection to Saint Ulrich is thus reflected both in the frescoes and in the name of one of the altars.

Routes and Activities in the Wider Günzburg Destination

The wider Günzburg destination offers two hiking trails with clearly distinct route profiles. The DonAuwald Hiking Trail is the first premium hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia and runs for around 60 kilometres between Günzburg and Schwenningen. By contrast, the DonauHänge is an 18.5-kilometre circular trail between Günzburg and Offingen through the hillside forest. Their length and route are concrete points of comparison when choosing different trails for your travel plans.

Another activity in the wider Günzburg destination is offered by the Turncable Wakepark in Thannhausen, where you can go wakeboarding and water skiing. Courses are available for beginners and advanced participants, as well as individuals and groups. Check the current operating days and course availability in advance.

Pilgrimage Sites and Museums in Günzburg

Maria Vesperbild is considered the largest pilgrimage site in Bavarian Swabia. A Way of the Cross leads from the pilgrimage church to the Fatima Grotto, which was built in the nearby forest in 1957 and restored in 2011. More than 1,000 votive plaques bearing words of thanks and testimonies to the help received from the Mother of God stand at the grotto. In the wider Günzburg destination, 400,000 to 500,000 pilgrims visit Maria Vesperbild each year to see the miraculous image of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Two museums in the wider Günzburg destination offer a different cultural focus. The Bavarian School Museum in Ichenhausen presents the development of the school system over thousands of years; its exhibits include a historic classroom that once accommodated around 50 children. The Museum of the City of Burgau presents the town’s history from the Middle Ages to the recent past across two floors and more than 700 square metres. The subjects offer different emphases: the history of the school system over a long period in one museum, and the development of a town in the other. Check the current opening hours of each institution before visiting.
