Günzburg brings together the city’s history, ecclesiastical art and trails through green spaces. The historic centre focuses on the museum, Frauenkirche and market square, while Bürgerpark and the hiking and cycling options offer a different perspective. This lets you choose different priorities for your stay without trying to squeeze historic sights and outdoor activities into a single itinerary item.

City History, Church and Market Square

The Günzburg local history museum presents the city’s historical and cultural heritage across more than 600 square metres. Its collection spans prehistoric and Roman archaeology, sacred art from the Gothic period through to the 19th century, and religious craftsmanship from the 18th and 19th centuries. It also includes objects relating to the history of local rule and everyday culture in Günzburg and the surrounding area. The museum therefore offers several ways to explore the city’s history side by side: archaeological finds, art, and objects from both religious and everyday life.

Frauenkirche is considered a Rococo masterpiece by master builder Dominikus Zimmermann. Another way to discover the sights is the audio-guided tour “LAUSCHTOUR Günzburg City Walk – Little Vienna in Bavarian Swabia.” It takes you to important sights in the historic centre, with commentary in German or English. If you prefer to plan your visit around a market, Günzburg’s market square hosts a weekly market every Tuesday, a tradition dating back to 1395 and one of the oldest in the region. As market arrangements can vary, it is advisable to check the date in advance.

In summer, the 250-metre stretch from the market square to the Unteres Tor becomes Swabia’s longest street café. Its seasonal nature is part of the area’s character: the street café is a summer offering, while the museum, Frauenkirche and city walk appeal to other interests.

Guided Tours and Music Events

Once a month, on a Thursday, the Günzburg local history museum hosts specially designed exclusive guided tours as part of its “Museum Thursday” series. From May to December, except in August, the Frauenkirche holds the half-hour concert series “A Little Church Music” at 10 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. If you plan to attend a tour or concert, check the date before your visit.

Bürgerpark, Hiking Trail and Views

Günzburg’s Bürgerpark was created in 1814 and is one of the early parks modelled on English landscape gardens. It has been protected as a nature conservation area since its creation and is home to botanical rarities. Activities available in the park include jogging, walking, reading and relaxing in peace. It offers a different setting from a visit focused mainly on the collections at the local history museum or the architecture of the Frauenkirche.

The DonAUwald Premium Hiking Trail begins at Günzburg station; its first section passes through the historic Bürgerpark. The route covers around 59 kilometres in five stages between Günzburg and Schwenningen. This scale clearly sets it apart from a visit to the park: the hiking trail is a multi-stage route, while Bürgerpark also offers opportunities for shorter, quieter activities. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Günzburg also has a particular connection to longer routes for cycling travellers: the city is considered an ideal starting point for cycling tours in Bavarian Swabia and a rewarding stage destination on the European Danube Cycle Path. Günzburg’s town tower is a viewpoint in the city, offering views across the Donaumoos as far as the Alps. On Tuesdays, after the climb, white sausages, pretzels and cold drinks are served in the tower keeper’s room; check whether this service is available before your visit.

More Activities

The Günzburg high ropes course is located at the LEGOLAND® Holiday Village. It offers eight courses, 42 climbing elements and a 15-metre-high climbing wall; the activities are for adventurers aged four and over. At heights of up to ten metres, there are 300-metre zip lines and a hero jump. These specific activities give a visit a different focus from the historic sites and trails through green spaces.
