The Oberegger Reservoir is a natural attraction in the immediate vicinity of Deisenhausen. Its history as a bathing lake and the area's importance for water birds are two distinctive features. The wider GĂĽnzburg travel region offers additional themes, from hiking trails to museums. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether the landscape or excursions in the region should shape your trip.

Oberegger Reservoir: bathing lake history and bird conservation

Until the end of the 1960s, the Oberegger Reservoir was a popular bathing lake. The lake and its immediate surroundings were designated nature reserves in 1989. This places its former use as a bathing lake and the protection of the landscape side by side as two different perspectives.

The 42-hectare Oberegger Reservoir Bird Sanctuary lies between Deisenhausen and Oberegg. It is a regionally important resting and breeding site for water birds; many of them also overwinter there. Anyone interested in birdlife and nature conservation will find a clear connection to these themes when visiting the area.

Hiking trails in the wider GĂĽnzburg travel region

The DonAuwald hiking trail is the first premium hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia and runs for around 60 kilometres between Günzburg and Schwenningen. The DonauHänge offers a different kind of route: this 18.5-kilometre circular trail passes through the slope forest between Günzburg and Offingen. The two trails differ in length and route type, without implying a particular walking time. The certified Streifzüge walking trails add to the hiking options, with routes along streams and ponds and through gently rolling countryside.

In Thannhausen, the Hansenhohl nature trail is around 1.5 kilometres long and features eight play and information stations. Visiting in winter is not recommended due to the risk of slipping. The trail also has a free quiz tour, “Sabotage im Hansenhohl,” available as a crime-mystery app; check whether it is currently available if you are interested.

The Ichenhausen Celtic Trail starts at the car park by the cemetery and uses audio at six listening points to present the lives of the Celts and Druids. The route from the first to the last listening point is three kilometres long. Listening Point 6 is currently inaccessible; check the latest route information before setting out.

Museums and pilgrimage sites in GĂĽnzburg

The Bavarian School Museum in Ichenhausen traces the development of schooling over thousands of years. A historic classroom recalls a time when around 50 children once fit inside. The Museum of the City of Burgau offers a different focus: spread over two floors and more than 700 square metres, it presents the town’s history from the Middle Ages to the recent past.

The Wettenhausen Monastery Museum opened in 2021 and offers insights into a tradition spanning almost a thousand years. The monumental stucco ceiling is a special feature of the Imperial Hall in Wettenhausen, where concerts, conferences and ceremonies are held. For a specific visit, check the museums’ current opening hours and the relevant programme.

Maria Vesperbild in the district of GĂĽnzburg, near Ziemetshausen, is considered the largest pilgrimage site in Bavarian Swabia. A Stations of the Cross trail leads from the pilgrimage church to the Fatima Grotto in a nearby forest. The grotto was built in 1957 and restored in 2011. More than 1,000 votive plaques bearing words of thanks and testimonies to the help received from the Mother of God stand at the grotto.

Water sports and leisure attractions

In Thannhausen, Turncable Wakepark offers wakeboarding and water skiing. Courses are available for beginners and advanced participants, as well as for individuals and groups. Check operating hours and course dates separately before visiting.

LEGOLAND® Deutschland in Günzburg features eleven themed areas and 68 attractions; MINILAND is the heart of the park. The theme park and its adjoining holiday village offer experiences for children aged between two and twelve. Check the latest operating information if you plan to include it in your itinerary.

Getting here and choosing a holiday apartment

There are several points of reference for finding your way around the region: the Leipheim, Günzburg and Burgau exits on the A8 lead directly into the district of Günzburg. Günzburg is also on Deutsche Bahn’s Stuttgart–Munich long-distance route. Plan the onward journey to your accommodation in Deisenhausen based on your connection and the places you want to visit.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Deisenhausen, it helps to have a clear focus, such as the Oberegger Reservoir and its birdlife, or an itinerary featuring hiking trails, museums and other destinations in GĂĽnzburg. Check the distances between places before combining several stops in one trip.
