The history of the parish church of the Nativity of Mary and the cycle path to Günzburg give you two specific topics to consider when planning a trip to Bubesheim. The church was once a pilgrimage site, and its organ has its own history of construction and restoration. In addition, a cycle path running alongside the road connects Bubesheim with Günzburg. The wider Günzburg travel destination offers further hiking, cultural and leisure destinations.

Church history in Bubesheim

Until the end of the 18th century, the parish church of the Nativity of Mary in Bubesheim was a well-known pilgrimage church. Pilgrims came from near and far. This timeframe places the pilgrimage within the history of the village. The Baroque-style organ adds its own story to the church: it was built by the Schwarzbauer company from Mindelheim in 1908. In 1988, the Offner company from Kissing near Augsburg partially renovated and refurbished the instrument. For a culturally focused trip, two aspects go hand in hand: the church’s former importance as a pilgrimage site and the organ’s history of construction and renewal.

Cycling and hiking in the wider Günzburg travel destination

A cycle path running alongside state road St 2020 connects Bubesheim and Günzburg. For planning further routes, the GünzBike cycling map provides an overview of river valley cycle routes in the district of Günzburg, as well as the Danube Cycle Route, the DonauTäler cycle route and the LEGOLAND® Family Route.

There are also different types of hiking trails to choose from. The DonAuwald hiking trail is the first premium hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia and runs for around 60 kilometres between Günzburg and Schwenningen. The DonauHänge, by contrast, is an 18.5-kilometre circular route between Günzburg and Offingen through the hillside forest. This gives you a choice between a route with two named endpoints and a circular tour. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

Pilgrimage, museums and leisure activities

In the wider Günzburg travel destination, Maria Vesperbild near Ziemetshausen is considered the largest pilgrimage site in Bavarian Swabia. A Stations of the Cross trail leads from the pilgrimage church to the Fatima Grotto in the nearby forest. The grotto was built in 1957 and restored in 2011. More than 1,000 votive plaques bearing words of thanks and testimonies to help received from the Mother of God are displayed there. The former pilgrimage significance of the church in Bubesheim and the facilities at Maria Vesperbild highlight different aspects of the destination’s religious history.

Ichenhausen and Burgau are among the places to visit for museum experiences. The Bavarian School Museum in Ichenhausen presents the development of the education system over thousands of years. Its historic classroom once accommodated around 50 children. The Museum of the City of Burgau presents the town’s history from the Middle Ages to the recent past across two floors and covers more than 700 square metres.

The amusement park and water sports offer different kinds of experiences. LEGOLAND® Deutschland in Günzburg has 11 themed areas and 68 attractions. The amusement park and its adjoining holiday village offer experiences for children aged 2 to 12. Turncable Wakepark in Thannhausen offers wakeboarding and water skiing. Its courses are for beginners and advanced participants, as well as individuals and groups; check current operating days and course availability before visiting.
