Eschenlohe offers a range of starting points for excursions: a rocky gorge, historic building and exhibition history, and a designated cycling route through the Murnau Moos. The hiking routes vary in length and difficulty rating; the cycling route passes through the named towns of Grafenaschau and Murnau before returning to Eschenlohe. The landscape, cultural history and cycling therefore offer different focal points for planning a trip.
Hiking at Asam Gorge
The hike via Katzensteg and to the Asam Gorge bridge starts and ends at Eschenlohe railway station, BahnhofstraĂźe 15. The route climbs uphill along Katzensteg to the bridge, from where you can look down into the gorge. Asam Gorge in Eschenlohe has rugged, steep rock walls and offers an impressive experience of nature.
Another hiking focus is the history of the Hartsteinwerk quarry: a 5.40-kilometre circular trail leads to the permanent exhibition on the history of the Hartsteinwerk in Eschenlohe. Its difficulty and fitness requirements are rated as very easy. The 7.74-kilometre circular hike to the Seven Springs, through the Archtal Gorge and over the Asam Gorge bridge is rated as easy and suitable for families. It is 2.34 kilometres longer than the circular trail to the exhibition. One circular trail leads to a historical exhibition, while the other includes several natural attractions: springs, a gorge and a bridge.
Cycling through the Murnau Moos
The cycling tour through the Murnau Moos starts and ends at the car park by the Eschenlohe exit on the A95 motorway. The 28.34-kilometre loop passes through Grafenaschau and Murnau before returning to Eschenlohe, and is suitable for cycling, gravel biking and mountain biking. Its difficulty and fitness requirements are both rated as very easy. Its starting point therefore differs from that of the hike via Katzensteg, which starts and ends at Eschenlohe railway station.
Places and other routes
The St Nicholas Chapel on the Vestbichl in Eschenlohe offers another glimpse into the area’s architectural history. In 1628, Abbot Ottmar of Ettal had it built from the remains of a crumbling castle tower. Unlike the Hartsteinwerk circular trail, which leads to the permanent exhibition, the historical focus here is on the construction of the chapel and the reuse of the tower remains.
More than 30 routes run through Eschenlohe and can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on cross-country skis. There are also more than 20 day tours that start in Eschenlohe or pass through the town as a stop along the way. These two figures describe different ways of including the town in your activity plans: the routes list several ways to get around, while the day tours either start in Eschenlohe or include it as a stop.
