On the eastern edge of Klais, you can see and walk along a partially exposed section of the Roman Via Raetia. The road dates to around 200 AD; wheel ruts still visible are a reminder of ancient vehicles. Together with the historic trails and seasonal activities, this gives a clear picture of what makes Klais an interesting place to consider when planning your trip.
Roman Road and Monastery History
Excavations along the Via Raetia also uncovered the remains of a Benedictine founding monastery associated with Scharnitz. It existed from 29 June 763 to 772; a bronze plaque commemorates it. The Roman road and the monastery remains thus point to different historical periods. The wheel ruts and exposed section of road also give the Roman Road a visible presence on site.
If you would like to explore on foot, you can choose an easy historic route from Klais along the Roman Road towards Elmau. The local tourism organisation also promotes a guided walking tour on site that focuses on the history of Klais. This offers two different ways to explore: a route along the road and a tour focused on local history.
Hiking, Cycling and Cross-Country Skiing
You can cycle from Klais towards Kranzbach and Elmau, with views of the Wetterstein Mountains along the way. Longer rides can continue towards Ferchensee and Lautersee. Conditions on cycling routes can vary by season, so it is advisable to check the conditions for your planned travel dates.
In winter, Klais offers cross-country skiing, including the Klais–Kaltenbrunn loop. Unlike the cycling destinations mentioned above, this activity depends on snow and seasonal trail conditions. Before making plans, check whether conditions are suitable for your travel dates.
Train Station and Local Trails
Klais train station was built in 1912 and is at an altitude of 933 metres. From there, you can explore the visible Roman Road and nearby walking paths. If you plan to travel by train, it is best to check the latest connections before your trip. The station is also a convenient starting point for including the historic trails in your local plans.
More Places to Visit in Krün
Barmsee, a swimming lake, is in Krün. A sunbathing lawn on its north-western shore offers views of the mountains of the Alpenwelt Karwendel. Swimming is a summer activity here and offers a different focus from the historic trails in Klais.
The Isar Nature Experience Trail is an easy, 7.4-kilometre loop that starts and ends in the centre of Krün. Themed areas and interactive stations introduce the habitat and nature along and around the Isar in a fun, engaging way. As route information is not always up to date, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.
A very easy 3.2-kilometre hike leads from the centre of Krün to the Maria Rast Chapel and through the Buckelwiesen near Krün. By comparison, the 7.4-kilometre Isar Nature Experience Trail is the longer loop and offers a different focus, with its themed areas and stations. St. Sebastian’s Church in the centre of Krün features subtle Rococo decoration inside. The Krüner Bauerntheater stages farces in the Bavarian dialect.
