The Baroque church, town hall and hospital reveal different facets of Wilhermsdorf’s history. The annual Pentecost Kirchweih adds a festival with clearly defined dates, while chains of ponds provide a distinctive natural feature. For your stay, you can weigh up architectural history, a special festival date and nature-related interests.

Historic buildings and their functions

The main Evangelical Lutheran church is a Baroque church with a tower above the choir and an elaborate façade. It was built between 1706 and 1714 to plans by Würzburg court architect Joseph Greißing and consecrated in 1714. Construction and consecration thus took place in the same year, while the church’s design makes the Baroque period a visible focus of local history.

The town hall was built under Franziska-Barbara between 1717 and 1718 as a residential and administrative building for the ruling family. Between 1719 and 1720, a rear wing was added to the Consulentenhaus; its upper floor contains a historic wedding hall. The hospital, completed in 1716, tells another chapter of social history: the two-storey half-timbered building has two attic floors and a gabled roof. It served as accommodation for people in need, who paid a small rent or, in some cases, nothing at all.

The chancery building, erected in 1720, stands in the marketplace and is still known as the Ritterhaus. The town hall, hospital and chancery building represent different purposes: administration and residence, accommodation, and chancery. This contrast adds more facets to local history than a look at the Baroque church alone.

Cemetery and chains of ponds

The Jewish cemetery in the municipality of Wilhermsdorf lies outside the central settlement, between Lenzenhaus and Eulengeschrei. About 500 gravestones remain there. Many are heavily weathered and made of sandstone; most date from the 18th to the early 20th century. The oldest gravestone dates from 1452. This means the cemetery’s history reaches considerably further back than the dates of most of the surviving stones.

The chains of ponds in Wilhermsdorf are another point of interest, and are home to rare animal and plant species. Architectural history and nature are distinct interests here: the historic buildings tell of former functions and construction periods, while the chains of ponds and their wildlife and plant life provide a landscape feature.

The Pentecost Kirchweih as a date to plan your trip around

The traditional Pentecost Kirchweih is considered the town’s largest and most important festival. It takes place every year over the Pentecost weekend, from Friday through Tuesday inclusive. This makes it possible to plan your trip around the festival dates rather than treating them as part of the permanent historic buildings.
