The Roßtal Archaeological Trail leads past several stops on Oberer Markt in the town center and includes the former judicial office of the Margraves in Roßtal.

Archaeology between the Market and the Castle

Each of the trail’s information boards has two sections. The lower section contains child-friendly text and illustrations, creating a separate level of interpretation. The trail also passes the excavation sites of the former castle. Large-format display boards explain the history of “urbs horsadal,” the name for Roßtal at its first documented mention in 954. Together, the market and the excavation sites provide different points of entry into the town’s history.

A local route or a day hike

In the wider Fürth destination, the Hohenzollern Cultural Hiking Trail offers another option: this day hike runs from Roßtal to Langenzenn along field and forest paths, with cultural and historical stops in Roßtal, Cadolzburg and Langenzenn. While the Archaeological Trail includes several stops on Oberer Markt, the Hohenzollern Trail is designed as a day hike between several towns. Check current local notices before setting out.

St. Laurentius: Coats of Arms and Tower Frieze

The parish church of St. Laurentius in Roßtal features various historical details in its gallery and on its tower. In the lower section of the gallery, nearest the choir, are the Hohenzollern and Brandenburg coats of arms, the Wittelsbach coat of arms contributed by Burgravine Elisabeth, and the coat of arms of the Burgrave of Nuremberg.

On the south side of the 52-meter-high tower, above the top of the Gothic window, is a frieze decorated with heads. One female head is thought to depict the Nuremberg Burgravine Elisabeth. The details of the church are distinctly different: the gallery displays coats of arms, while the tower features figurative decoration.

Monastery Garden, Guided Tours and Spitzweed

The grounds of the Museumshof in Roßtal include a monastery garden laid out based on an early medieval model. Unlike the trail, this historical feature is focused on a landscaped garden area. Guided tours in the town of Roßtal share stories about the buildings and squares of the old market town. If you would like to plan a guided tour, check availability with the local organizer.

At Spitzweed, benches invite visitors to sit and watch the fish in the pond. In early summer, you can also hear a “Forschkonzert” there. Spitzweed thus offers a different focus from the archaeological and architectural themes: here, the pond, benches and seasonal experience of nature take center stage.

More Things to See in the Wider Fürth Destination

In Ammerndorf, the Art and Nature Trail offers four themed routes through art and natural landscapes. The educational trail starts at the threshing machine house in Ammerndorf. Check current local notices before visiting. In Cadolzburg, the castle has preserved structural elements dating from around 1250 and houses the interactive castle experience museum “HerrschaftsZeiten! Erlebnis Cadolzburg”; check access arrangements with the castle operator. In Langenzenn, the former Augustinian Canons’ monastery dates from 1409 and has a particularly well-preserved cloister.
