If you would like to explore Zenting on foot, three routes listed on the Sonnenwald hiking map can be distinguished primarily by distance and starting and ending points. Two begin and end in Zenting; the third passes through Zenting but starts and ends in Ranfels. This lets you choose based on your preferred distance and starting point.

Hiking Routes by Length and Course

The approximately 8.5 km panoramic loop runs from Zenting via Daxstein and back to Zenting. At approximately 12 km, the Lindenweg is longer; it also begins and ends in Zenting. On this loop, you can take a detour to the “Kleiner Aschenstein” viewpoint. The two Zenting loops therefore differ both in distance and course: the panoramic loop runs via Daxstein, while the detour can be added as an option on the Lindenweg.

The approximately 11 km Brotzeit loop begins and ends in Ranfels and passes through Zenting. Its length falls between that of the two Zenting loops, but its starting and ending points differ from theirs.

The Sonnenwald hiking map lists these routes; it appears to date from 2019. Check the route information against current details before setting out.

Nature and Culture in the Wider Destination of Freyung-Grafenau

In the wider destination of Freyung-Grafenau, the Bavarian Forest National Park extends into the district of Freyung-Grafenau. It opened on October 7, 1970, as Germany’s first national park. According to the zone map dated 2024, 75.37 percent of the national park’s area belongs to its natural zones.

Another landscape in the district is the Wildbachklamm Buchberger Leite gorge. There, steep rock ridges force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deep, narrow channel; remnants of primeval forest have been preserved in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woodlands. An eight-kilometer themed hiking trail runs through the gorge between Freyung and Ringelai, with information boards and an accompanying brochure. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels cut into the rock, and above-ground channels bear witness to centuries of human activity. The landscape and traces of past use come together in the same gorge.

At the Schramlhaus in Freyung, architectural and collection histories come together. Built around 1700, the house is now the oldest farmstead in Freyung and, in terms of its original character, one of the oldest in the district of Freyung-Grafenau. It houses the Wolfsteiner local history museum, with more than a hundred original examples of reverse glass painting, a form of religious folk art. The historic farmstead and religious folk art thus represent distinct cultural themes.

The Gabreta Archaeological Adventure Park focuses on the Celtic past: its buildings were reconstructed based on original Celtic structures and symbolically represent finds discovered on the hill of Paul Freund. Bread baking is one of the practical activities for visitors; this program offering may change. Expert-led tours about Celtic life can also be booked.
