Bischofsreuth offers a range of ways to plan a trip combining nature and cultural history. The Golden Trail Nature Experience Trail explores the history of a trade route; the Flursteig trail brings traditional farming in the low mountain range to life. There are also traces of the forest-strip landscape, the Bischofsreut Fairy-Tale Forest and an annual May tradition. Travellers choosing a destination based on specific interests can explore trade history, the landscape and individual local experiences here.

Trade Route and Farming

The Golden Trail Nature Experience Trail starts in Bischofsreut and follows a medieval trade route towards Bohemia. It traces the route taken by former packhorse traders and their horses. The route thus connects two cultural and historical perspectives: the trade route to Bohemia and the history of packhorse trading. For travellers interested in historic routes, this offers a different focus from the landscape and farming themes of the Flursteig trail.

The Flursteig Nature Experience Trail leads through flowering mountain meadows and forest paths around Bischofsreut. It showcases traditional farming typical of the region's low mountain range and passes one of the region's last juniper heaths, home to rare animal and plant species. The trail also features small historic fields, an irrigated meadow with a meadow channel, and old, increasingly rare domestic animal breeds. The Flursteig trail therefore focuses both on the landscape and on earlier forms of land use.

Forest-Strip Fields and Historic Traces

Bischofsreut is described as a forest-strip village. In the Bischofsreut area, the basic layout of several forest-strip villages, with their characteristic strips of land, has been preserved. Interactive museum trails lead to the highlights of Bischofsreut's forest-strip fields. Around 780 hectares of these fields have been designated as part of the Europe-wide Natura 2000 network of protected areas. These local and landscape features add another cultural perspective to the themes of the two nature experience trails.

Another historical landmark is the old bridge over the Harlandbach stream: in 1996, a border crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and skiers was opened there. The year marks when the crossing opened and is part of its history.

Fairy-Tale Forest and May Tradition

The Bischofsreut Fairy-Tale Forest presents twelve traditional folk tales for children. The playground includes, among other things, a large wooden train that children can climb into, a climbing house, picnic areas, barbecue spots and root-wood benches. The fairy tales and play facilities offer different elements of a visit to the same place; the amenities include both places to play and places to sit.

Every year in May, a rogation procession followed by an outdoor church service takes place at St. Nepomuk Chapel. If you would like to include this tradition in your travel plans, check the specific event dates.
