Fürsteneck can be explored through two compelling features: Fürsteneck Castle tells the story of medieval border defense, while the panoramic terrace on Atzldorfer Berg offers views of the Alps and the Bavarian Forest. You can also include Fürsteneck-Ohbruck station in a hiking or cycling tour. Culture, landscape and outdoor activity offer different focal points. You can then decide which theme you want to shape your stay.

Fürsteneck Castle: Border History and Chapel

As the landmark of the village, Fürsteneck Castle offers a glimpse into an early chapter of border history. The castle was built around 1200 under Bishop Wolfker of Erla as a western defense against the Duchy of Bavaria. This defensive purpose gives the castle a clear historical context. The oldest known document so far to mention Fürsteneck Castle dates from 1232. The two dates refer to different things: around 1200 is the construction period, while 1232 is the year of the oldest written mention known to date. This distinction makes it possible to separate the castle’s origins from its written record.

The grounds also contain a Baroque chapel, which is now the parish church of Fürsteneck. The castle and chapel therefore represent different periods and uses: the castle was part of a defensive border system, while the chapel currently serves a religious function. Those interested in architecture and local history will find different aspects of Fürsteneck reflected in these two buildings.

Panoramic Views and Active Trip Planning

Atzldorfer Berg, Fürsteneck’s highest point, is home to a panoramic terrace with views of the Alps and the Bavarian Forest. Visibility depends on the weather; if the views are an important part of your trip, keep an eye on conditions and treat the viewpoint as an option rather than a guaranteed panorama. The landscape offers a different perspective on the village, complementing the history of the castle.

Fürsteneck-Ohbruck station can be included in a hiking or cycling tour. If you are traveling on weekends or public holidays, check the timetable before setting out. This lets you coordinate your tour plans with actual train times instead of adding the station to your day’s itinerary without checking the specific connection.

Freyung-Grafenau as a Wider Travel Destination

The Bavarian Forest National Park extends into Freyung-Grafenau, the wider travel destination. It opened on October 7, 1970, as Germany’s first national park. The 2024 zoning map shows that 75.37 percent of the national park’s area is designated as natural zones. Alongside the castle’s history, the structure of a protected area is another regional theme to explore.

Another landscape in the wider travel destination of Freyung-Grafenau is Buchberger Leite. In the wild-stream gorge, steep rock outcrops force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deeply constricted channel; remnants of primeval forest have survived in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woodlands. At the same time, historic timber-floating walls, tunnels carved into the rock and surface canals tell the story of centuries of human activity. An eight-kilometer themed hiking trail, with information panels and an accompanying brochure, runs through Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai. The landscape, vegetation and evidence of earlier land use give this hiking experience a range of different facets.

Schramlhaus is also part of the cultural attractions in the wider travel destination of Freyung-Grafenau. It is in Freyung and was built around 1700. Today, it is the oldest farmhouse in Freyung and, in terms of its original character, one of the oldest in the district of Freyung-Grafenau. The house holds more than one hundred original examples of reverse glass painting, a form of religious folk art. It is also home to the Wolfsteiner Local History Museum. The building’s history, collection and museum offer different ways to explore the region’s culture.
