Falkenbach is included in hiking routes and has historic buildings with clearly distinguishable features. Route 2 leads in the direction of Falkenbach; an alternative to Route 3 runs there via the Kreuzweg. The chapel and bakehouses tell of different periods of construction. Other cultural, nature, and winter sports topics are covered under the explicitly broader destination of Freyung and are kept separate from Falkenbach here.

Falkenbach on the Freyung Routes

The 9.5-kilometre Route 2 leads in the direction of Falkenbach and continues to Geyersberg. An alternative to Route 3 runs from Köppenreut via the Kreuzweg to Falkenbach and also continues in the direction of Geyersberg. The two descriptions use different reference points: Route 2 has a specific length, while the alternative route gives a clear sequence of Köppenreut, the Kreuzweg, Falkenbach, and Geyersberg. This makes it possible to identify the route using the places named, without treating the two routes as the same.

The Chapel and Historic Bakehouses

Falkenbach is home to a chapel at the address Falkenbach 19. Its steep roof has a roof turret; the building has a three-sided apse and rubble-stone masonry. It dates from 1949 and preserves older fittings. This combination of its construction date and older furnishings gives the chapel its own distinctive historical character.

Falkenbach is also home to two historic bakehouses. Both are small buildings with shallow-pitched gable roofs, round-arched openings, and rubble-stone masonry. One dates to the first half of the 19th century; the other probably dates from the same period. Compared with the chapel from 1949, the bakehouses therefore point to an earlier period of construction. Their shared materials and differing roof and opening styles also make it possible to tell the buildings apart.

Other Topics in the Broader Destination of Freyung

In Freyung, the eight-kilometre “People and Nature in the Buchberger Leite” themed hiking trail runs between Freyung and Ringelai. Information boards and numbered posts along the trail explain the stream and river system, the power of water, timber rafting, and geological history, including the Pfahl rock formations. Natural history and historical topics are presented side by side.

Freyung also has cultural attractions: At the gallery in the Europahaus, numerous artists from the Bavarian Forest–Bohemia region regularly exhibit art and culture. The Schramlhaus, built around 1700, is considered the oldest rural homestead in Freyung. The Kreuzberger Kapellenweg – Path of Reflection brings together the history of the route and religious tradition: it was established around Kreuzberg and complements the revived pilgrimage to St. Anne. Kreuzberg is a district of Freyung. Along the path are ten information boards and four chapels; the oldest was built in 1509.

Recurring annual events in Freyung include the traditional Wolfaustreiben and the Bürgerfest. The Historical Association “In-der-Freyung” organizes the Wolfaustreiben every year shortly before St. Martin’s Day in Freyung’s town square. The Freyung Bürgerfest has been celebrated every year since 1979.

Winter Activities in Freyung

Freyung offers a range of winter sports options. The Freyung-Geyersberg beginner ski and snowboard centre has a 540-metre-long double drag lift. The easy ski slope in Solla is suitable for beginners and advanced skiers; operating hours depend on sufficient snow cover. The Freyung-Kreuzberg cross-country skiing centre has 30 kilometres of classic tracks and an additional four-kilometre skating track. Track conditions are seasonal. This information helps distinguish between downhill and Nordic activities and keep snow conditions in mind when planning.
