The Franconian Jura offers a range of different hiking experiences: a trail along a historic pilgrimage route, a geological nature trail, a 10-kilometre circular route and a panoramic trail divided into five stages. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these formats separately; they offer different points of reference for the focus of your tour and how to get there.

Hiking and history near Tagmersheim

Spindeltal stretches for seven kilometres through the Franconian Jura. The hiking trail in Spindeltal near Tagmersheim initially follows the Way of St James, a historic pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The seven kilometres refer to the extent of the valley, not the length of the hiking trail. Galgenkapelle chapel is also a sight to see along the hike. Another historical landmark is Tagmersheim Castle, built in the 16th century.

Geological themes near Tagmersheim and Rögling

The sinkhole nature trail around Tagmersheim and Rögling explains geological phenomena of the Monheimer Alb on six information panels. This makes a specific subject the focus of the route: the panels offer insights into the geology of the Monheimer Alb and make the nature trail a themed hiking option.

Monheimer Höhensande occur at one location on the sinkhole nature trail in the Franconian Jura, which is formed from Jurassic limestone. This occurrence adds a concrete geological example to the six panels.

Circular route or panoramic trail in stages

Hiking Trail Monheimer Alb No. 11 is a 10-kilometre circular route along the southern edge of the Franconian Jura. The Franconian Jura Panoramic Trail is organised differently: it comprises five stages. A 2022 brochure describes the stages’ start and end points as easily accessible by public transport. Check current connections before travelling.

The routes offer different approaches to planning: for Trail No. 11, the circular format and length are specified; for the panoramic trail, the stages and travel to their start and end points are the main considerations. The Hinterhaslacher Heide is one of the smaller scenic highlights along the Franconian Jura Panoramic Trail.

Landscapes in the south and north

Hohle Fels near Happurg is one of the scenic attractions of the southern Franconian Jura. To the north, the Franconian Switzerland–Franconian Jura Nature Park encompasses the entire natural region of the northern Franconian Jura, from the Main Valley near Lichtenfels to the Pegnitz Valley near Hersbruck. This low mountain range landscape is characterised by bizarre rock formations and more than 1,000 large and small caves with stalactites. Hiking, climbing and cycling are possible activities there; conditions vary by location.
