By the river and above the town

The Muggendorf Riverside Promenade route runs right along the banks of the Wiesent and passes the Nature Park Information Centre in the Old Railway Station. The exhibition there presents local flora and fauna, Franconian traditions, the historic railway, and the formation and conservation of caves; it also showcases natural and cultural features of the Franconian Switzerland – Franconian Jura Nature Park. This means that the same route brings together the riverside and themes from natural and cultural history.

The Muggendorf Pavilion, also known in Franconian as “Babylon”, is a traditional viewpoint on a freestanding rock above the town. From there, you can look out over the town centre and the widening Wiesent Valley as far as Neideck Castle ruins, where the valley narrows again. The 12-metre-high observation tower on Hohe Kreuz offers a different perspective, with a 270-degree view.

Hiking trails with different characters

In the Muggendorf-Streitberg destination area, a far-reaching, exceptionally well-marked network of hiking trails leads to scenic highlights and popular viewpoints. The Felsensteig has an alpine character and includes a section secured with a wire rope. In the wider Wiesenttal destination, the 35.0 km, moderately difficult Wiesenttal Tour also starts in Muggendorf and follows the Wiesent Valley to Forchheim. The options differ in their planning considerations: the Felsensteig is defined by its alpine character and secured section, while the Wiesenttal Tour is defined by its stated length and moderate difficulty rating.

Caves and historical names

Rosenmüller Cave above Muggendorf is a former show cave considered easy to explore on foot. The cave is listed as closed from 1 October to 31 March to protect bats. Check locally before your visit to see whether this arrangement is still in effect; you should also check the seasonal cave conditions in advance.

The region’s names also tell a story about its past: at the end of the 18th century, the first cave explorers and Romantics called it “Muggendorfer Gebürg”, before the name “Franconian Switzerland” became established. The Nature Park Information Centre offers further insights into the landscape’s history, including the historic railway and the formation and conservation of caves.

Steam railway, minigolf and the Wiesent Valley

You can board and alight the Franconian Switzerland Steam Railway in Muggendorf. Timetables vary by season, so check them before your trip. Muggendorf Minigolf is an 18-hole course next to the town hall. Daily play in daylight is listed as an option during the summer months. Check before your visit to see whether this information is still current.

The wider Wiesenttal destination also includes Neideck Castle ruins, a testament to medieval history that offers views of the surrounding landscape. The ruins cannot be reached by car. Paths lead uphill from the outdoor swimming pool in Streitberg and from the district of Haag; check parking options separately. From Muggendorf, the ruins can also be spotted in the landscape from the pavilion.
