Wellheim lies in the middle of the Urdonautal valley. In the village, the Urdonautal Museum and St. Andreas Parish Church offer insights into different chapters of history. The surrounding area is shaped by wooded hills, springs and unusual rock formations. When planning a trip, you can choose between cultural history, nature observation and marked routes with varying levels of difficulty.

Wellheim Museum and History

The Urdonautal Museum Wellheim displays exhibits in 13 display cases on natural and landscape history, geological history, prehistory and early history, the history of the market town and its districts, and industrial history. A model illustrates Wellheim Castle as it appeared during construction in the 14th century. The historical picture extends beyond the village: a total of five castles have been documented within the municipality of Wellheim. The museum opened in 1990 in the former gatehouse of the market town of Wellheim.

Another historical highlight is the Catholic parish church of St. Andreas on the western edge of Wellheim, at BurgstraĂźe 3. Its origins date back to the 11th or 12th century; Baroque stucco work and ceiling paintings from around 1700 have been preserved. A memorial plaque commemorates Count Konrad of Helfenstein and his wife. Konrad held the lordship of Wellheim from 1458 to 1473. The church thus brings together architectural history and a specific reminder of the former lordship.

Rock Formations and Springs in the Surrounding Area

About one kilometre northeast of Wellheim lies the Galgenberg: a wooded, elongated hill around 50 metres high. A karst spring is located at its foot. Another notable feature is the Zigeunerloch, a striking, unusual rock formation in the dense beech forest. Fissures and grottoes shape the formation; it lies along a marked walking path from Wellheim.

Several individual springs can be seen at the spring basin of the Schutter spring. During renaturation work in 2008, Jurassic limestone was exposed behind the spring basin. The Wellheim dry valley adds to the wider landscape: coming from Rennertshofen, it winds in broad loops through the Jura landscape of the Southern Franconian Alb. Together, these places show different features of the landscape, from springs and limestone to wooded hills and rock faces.

Hiking Trails and Climbing Sections

The Urdonautalsteig quality trail passes through the municipality of Wellheim. Route conditions may change, so check current information before setting out. The Felsensteig is described as a 4-kilometre route marked in red, with difficulty grade I. It includes short, easy climbing sections that require sturdy footwear and sure-footedness. The route passes the Hintere Konsteiner Wand, Dohlenfelsen, Lucky Luke, Merltürme, Weiße Wand, Fensterlwand, Oberlandwand, Aichaer Wand, Oberländer climbing area and Lochwand.

The trails appeal to different interests: the Felsensteig focuses on a marked route and climbing sections, while the Urdonautalsteig is designated as a quality trail through the municipality. Those more interested in culture will find two other highlights in the village: the museum and parish church. These differences can help you plan a stay in Wellheim and balance your days between architectural and local history, landscapes and outdoor activity.
