St. Martin’s Church and the Jura House provide architectural clues to the town’s history; hiking and cycling trails add different ways to incorporate the landscape into your plans. If you choose Emsing, you can shape your stay around cultural history and outdoor activity.

St. Martin’s Fortified Church and Local History

The Catholic Church of St. Martin in Emsing was once a fortified church. Keyhole loopholes in the tower, an underground escape passage and remains of the high cemetery wall have been preserved. These architectural features make the church’s former defensive function tangible.

A ruling by the village court is documented in Emsing in 1306. The church’s furnishings also provide a more precise sense of time: the high altar was created in the early 18th century; the altarpiece is dated 1764 and signed by Anton Köll, a painter from Kipfenberg. This distinguishes the period when the altar was made from the date of the painting.

The Jura House in Emsing

The Jura House in Emsing, the former schoolhouse, stands directly above St. Martin’s Church. It was built in 1871 along with a small barn and extended with an addition in 1900. The listed building is distinguished by rubble-stone masonry, a very well-preserved roof structure and a renewed stone-slab roof.

These building features offer different architectural insights: the masonry relates to the walls, the roof structure to the construction, and the stone-slab roof to the renewed covering. Together with the two construction phases, they provide a more nuanced picture than the dates alone.

Hiking and Cycling Trails

The 4 km circular trail around Emsing starts at St. Martin’s Church. It passes through woodland and juniper heath and along the Anlauter and Morsbach rivers; most of the route is away from motorized traffic. The loop can therefore be understood in terms of both its starting point and its varied landscape features.

The Morsbachtalweg No. 10 is another circular trail, 7 km long. It is estimated to take about two hours to walk—a useful detail for planning your day, without confusing it with the walking time for the 4 km loop.

Cyclists will also find a named route section: the Anlautertal cycle path from Titting to Kinding passes through Emsing and continues along the forest to Altdorf. Before hiking or cycling, it is worth checking the trail signs and route conditions, as these can change.

The Hirschgehege deer enclosure at Hotel Dirsch in Emsing is another way to connect with nature. Guests and visitors can watch the animals there and learn more about them.

Titting: A Distinct Historical Focus

In the wider destination of Titting, the former moated castle is located in the upper part of the market town at the foot of Kreuzberg. Its irregular octagonal layout is enclosed by two-storey wings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, which frame the courtyard. The layout, wings and courtyard are among the distinctive features of its architecture.

The brewing tradition is also connected with the moated castle: in 1707, the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt had a brewery established there; beer has been brewed there ever since. This adds a continuing history of use to the architectural perspective.

At the Titting fossil collection point, visitors may, with a little luck and patience, find fossilized plants, crinoids and occasionally ammonites. Smaller finds may be taken home as prehistoric souvenirs.
