Oettingen i.Bay. brings together architecture, local history and the geology of the Ries. The town lies on the northern edge of the Ries Crater, which has a diameter of about 25 kilometres. Visitors who want to organise their stay around a theme will find several starting points: the residential palace and old town for architectural and urban history, the local history museum for a glimpse of life in times gone by, and the Geopark information centre for the development of the continents and the effects of the Ries meteorite impact.

Residential Palace and Old Town

The residential palace was built in the Late Renaissance style from 1679 to 1687 by Mathias Weiß of Kassel for the Oettingen-Spielberg line. Its construction dates and specified style give the palace its own historical significance within the town. Marktplatz offers a different architectural contrast: it forms the centre of Oettingen’s town centre, with Baroque-style gables on the east side and half-timbered gables on the west side.

The town hall is also one of Swabia’s most magnificent half-timbered buildings. The 400-year-old Königsturm is Oettingen’s town gate in the direction of Nördlingen. Together, these buildings offer different ways to explore the town’s history: from palace construction and the design of the central square to the tower’s role as a gate.

Local History and Guided Discoveries

The Oettingen Local History Museum has been open since 1908. As a regional museum with a particular focus, it displays a rich collection created through donations from the local community and illustrates life in times gone by. A guided tour of Oettingen, a historic residential town, offers insights into more than 1,200 years of local history and leads through picturesque lanes and streets. Check the tour booking details before your trip.

From March to September, visitors can discover Oettingen’s many white stork nests on a guided tour. This seasonal option offers a different focus from a tour of the town’s history. Those interested in the storks can plan their travel dates accordingly and check the tour dates in advance.

Easter Fountains and the Geopark

Every year, ten fountains in Oettingen are decorated for Easter during the week before Easter and the week after it. The decorations include garlands of fresh greenery, hand-painted eggs, flowers and baked goods. For visitors who want to experience this long-standing tradition, the two weeks around Easter are the key time to visit.

The Oettingen Geopark information centre features an interactive “Clock of Earth History.” It illustrates the development of the continents and the effects of the Ries meteorite impact. In the wider Donau-Ries travel region, the district describes the Geopark Ries and the Ries Crater, formed by a meteorite impact, as a tourist attraction. In Oettingen, this regional theme meets the town’s specific location on the crater’s northern edge.

The River as Another Part of the Town’s Identity

Oettingen’s Wörnitz outdoor swimming pool is located on an island in the Wörnitz and is one of the last river swimming pools in Bavaria. This means that, alongside the palace, half-timbered houses and geology, the river is another defining theme of a stay. Those who want to explore Oettingen beyond its architectural history can include this landscape feature in their choice of interests.
