The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary and the listed market square ensemble give Pilsting a distinct cultural focus. Those looking beyond the town will find further cultural and nature attractions in the wider Dingolfing-Landau destination.

Building history and the market square in Pilsting

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary in Pilsting is a Late Gothic structure dating from the 15th century. A keystone in the sacristy bears the year 1491; the larger-than-life crucifix on the chancel arch dates from the 16th century. The church therefore brings together a dated architectural feature and a later furnishing. These details reveal different periods: the keystone’s date belongs to the 15th century, while the crucifix is from the 16th century. The market square ensemble in Pilsting is also protected as a historic monument and adds to the town’s cultural focus.

Culture in the wider Dingolfing-Landau destination

In Landau’s old town is the Kastenhof Landau. Original archaeological finds from the region tell the story of the first farmers. Hands-on replicas, striking images, and the lifelike figure of Lisar, a Neolithic woman, bring the past to life. Early history and different ways of interpreting it are thus presented together.

The Landau Local History Museum offers a different historical perspective in the 250-year-old Weißgerberhaus. Its themes range from rural domestic culture, faith, and devotion to Landau’s town history, bourgeois homes and self-representation, and urban crafts. The focus is on the 19th century. In contrast to the Kastenhof, the museum looks especially at urban life and domestic culture in this later period.

The Dingolfing Museum is spread across three historic buildings in the Upper Town: the Herzogsburg, the Pfleghof, and the Getreidekasten. It presents the city’s history and industrial history from the Neolithic period to the present day. The Herzogsburg itself was built around 1410 as the Kastner’s official residence and as accommodation for the Bavarian dukes. In the same region, the pilgrimage church of Maria im Steinfels offers another historical point of interest: it was consecrated in 1726, and its altar stands in front of a Nagelfluh rock face.

Landscape and activities in the wider Dingolfing-Landau destination

The “Vilstal bei Marklkofen” nature reserve covers almost 175 hectares and provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. The Vilstalsee, covering around 100 hectares, lies within the protected area. The two area figures help place the lake within the wider landscape without equating the two. The Vilstalsee is a great starting point for walks and cycling tours; boating, sailing, and windsurfing are also available. Visitors can therefore choose from nature areas, walking and cycling routes, and a range of water sports. In the wider Dingolfing-Landau destination, the Parnkofen Forest Adventure Trail opened as a new attraction in the district on September 20, 2012.
