In the Amper Valley, floodplain forests, reed beds, wet meadows and numerous oxbow lakes shape the river landscape of Hebertshausen. Cultural highlights range from the Old Church of St. George to the memorial site at the former SS shooting range. You can therefore explore the area according to your interests when planning your stay: river landscapes and cycling, art and church history, or remembrance.
The Amper Valley and the circular route
Floodplain forests, reed beds and wet meadows line the river in the Amper Valley, alongside numerous oxbow lakes. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by the river but also by a range of different habitats. Another way to combine a visit to Hebertshausen with some exercise is the “Fish, Beer and Moorland” cycle route. It is about 21 kilometres long and starts and ends in Hebertshausen. You can reach it via Hebertshausen S-Bahn station or the Ammer-Amper cycle route, among other options. The municipality has an S2 S-Bahn stop; check the current timetable for your journey and the route conditions before setting out on your bike tour.
Art and history at the Old Church of St. George
The Old Church of St. George underwent extensive restoration and redesign from 2014 to 2020. Since 2020, its interior has been defined by a vivid colour composition by German-American artist Jerry Zeniuk. The church can be reached by car or via Hebertshausen S-Bahn station; access is step-free. The castle complex, built above the Amper Valley in the 12th century, offers another point of historical interest. It included a Romanesque chapel. This castle chapel is understood here as part of the castle complex; it should not be confused with the Old Church of St. George.
Memorial site and outdoor exhibition
The former SS shooting range in Hebertshausen was redeveloped as a memorial site with an outdoor exhibition in 2014. The three-language open-air exhibition features more than 100 photographs, documents, drawings and plans. Information panels along a circular path help visitors understand the events that took place on the site. The exhibition and the route give the memorial site a tangible form, while its subject offers a distinct focus for your stay. Check the current visitor information in advance.
Architectural history in the municipality
Schloss Deutenhofen was built by the Barons of Mandl in the municipality of Hebertshausen. In Oberweilbach, the castle includes a two-storey main building with a hipped roof, built in 1692, and the late Gothic Chapel of St. Martin, renovated in 1845. Also in Oberweilbach is the Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist, built by Carl Lärlinger in 1711. The Catholic parish church of St. Peter on Kirchenstraße was built at the end of the 15th century over an older core and extended in 1839. These buildings offer a range of historical points of interest within the municipality.
Farm shop in Hebertshausen
At the Hirschvogel organic farm, you can buy farm-produced eggs and pasta, as well as potatoes and onions grown on the farm to Bioland standards. The daily self-service sales hours are listed as 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Since opening hours are a practical part of planning your day, it is advisable to check them before visiting. The farm shop is a specific place to shop, while the cycle route, church and memorial site cater to other interests when planning your stay.
