Burgkunstadt brings together a distinctive historic urban layout and a variety of cultural and leisure interests. The recommended city walk takes you to several cultural sites. An edition of the “Borkuschter Underworld” listed for 2026 also led visitors into selected cellars beneath the market square. For your planning, it is worth considering the walk and individual visiting options separately.

Burgkunstadt between the Upper Town and the river valley

The Burgkunstadt Old Town ensemble includes the historic Upper Town, with the former castle grounds and adjoining areas on a promontory almost 30 metres above the Upper Main Valley. The Lower Town lies at the edge of the river valley. The Old Town therefore offers two distinct topographic settings: the elevated Upper Town and the area at the edge of the valley. When exploring Burgkunstadt, you can experience these districts as distinct impressions rather than viewing the Old Town as a single backdrop.

City walk with several cultural stops

The recommended city walk leads to the Vogtei and includes visits to the historic room in the town hall, the Shoemakers’ Museum and the parish church. The route returns to the Plan via the Lend. The recommended walk covers about 1,800 metres and takes around 90 minutes. These approximate figures give you a practical guide for planning your time; route details may change. If you particularly want to visit the interiors, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

Cellar tour, chapel and skatepark

In the edition of the “Borkuschter Underworld” listed for 2026, Rudi Fetzer and Karl Heinz Goldfuß guided visitors through six selected cellars beneath Burgkunstadt’s market square. Sturdy footwear and a flashlight were required for the cellar tour described; participants took part at their own risk. These conditions apply to the listed edition. Check the relevant participation information for any other tour.

Another distinctive cultural feature can be found in the cemetery grounds: a Madonna in a halo of rays adorns the chancel arch of the Chapel of the Five Wounds of Christ, a pilgrimage chapel. According to the town, Jan Park Burgkunstadt is one of the largest skateparks in Bavaria. The chapel and skatepark cater to different interests and complement the historic stops on the city walk with a sacred image and a sporting focus, respectively.

More to discover in the wider destination of Lichtenfels

The wider destination of Lichtenfels also offers its own urban and cultural attractions. The Old Town of Lichtenfels has retained its typically Franconian character; the Bamberg Gate and Kronach Gate are preserved, and parts of the old town wall are still visible. The Lichtenfels Basket Market takes place every year on the third weekend in September. If you plan to attend, check the specific event dates before travelling.

The 14-kilometre Pfad der Flechtkultur (Path of Basketry Culture) adventure trail connects Lichtenfels and Michelau along nature trails through the Main floodplains. Its 23 information boards cover the history and traditions of basket-making, the basket industry and the basket trade along the Upper Main. Along the trail, you can also find a willow maze for children, a willow shell in the river bathing area, a woven tipi at Ortswiesensee in Oberwallenstadt and other woven art installations. In addition to Burgkunstadt’s urban history, Lichtenfels thus offers a distinct focus on basket-making and the Main floodplains.

Lichtenfels Town Palace houses municipal collections on the history of beer and breweries, the railway and the basket trade. As exhibition content may change, check which topics are currently on display before visiting. Public tours take place several times a week at Banz Abbey in Bad Staffelstein; confirm the dates before your trip.

When choosing, you can start with the kind of stay you want: Burgkunstadt offers the city walk described here and local cultural stops, while Lichtenfels adds further urban, craft and landscape attractions. This lets you shape your trip around specific interests without treating the places or their attractions as interchangeable.
