A museum dedicated to match production, a trail to chapels and crosses, and a nature trail with more than 15 stations: Grafenwiesen offers a range of ways to shape your stay. If you’re looking for a hotel in Grafenwiesen, these themes can help you explore the town according to your interests—whether you’d like to include culture, hiking, forests and wildlife, or cycling in your trip.

Matchboxes and the history of production

The Grafenwiesen Matchstick Museum has hundreds of matchboxes and displays a selection of them. It also features containers and ships made from matches. The permanent exhibition places these objects in the context of local and regional match production, tracing its development from small-scale trade to specialised large-scale industry. The museum thus brings tangible objects together with the history of a branch of production.

A short film also explores historical connections with neighbouring Czechia. This adds a cross-border perspective to the story of manufacturing. Those interested in the development of production can therefore find a different way in than simply looking at the boxes and objects made from matches. Both are part of the museum’s character, which is not limited to a collection of matchboxes.

The Chapel Trail and local hiking routes

The Grafenwiesen Chapel Hiking Trail is about 15 km long. It connects 10 chapels, a pilgrimage church, the parish church and 16 wayside and stone crosses; in some places, it also includes death boards. The trail leads to the community’s rural and scenic landmarks. Its appeal lies not only in its length, but also in the way it connects religious sites with other features of local and landscape history.

The other local hiking routes have their own marking system: they are marked red and white and bear the letters “Gw” and the numbers 1 to 7. These markings help distinguish the local routes. When planning, you can choose between the Chapel Hiking Trail with its named stops and the numbered local hiking routes, rather than treating all the hiking options as one and the same route.

Forests or cycling

The Grafenwiesen Nature Experience Trail is a circular route with more than 15 stations. The black woodpecker “Graf Wiesi” introduces visitors to the forest and its inhabitants. The trail focuses on something different from the Chapel Hiking Trail: here, the emphasis is on forests and wildlife, while the other trail features chapels, churches and wayside markers. If you’d like to include different themes in your trip, this distinction can help you decide which trail best suits your interests.

Cycling is another local option. The Lamer–Winkel–Arber cycle route passes through the community; for the most part, it follows paved cycle paths or quiet side roads. This describes the route’s course, not every local road in general. Cycling can therefore be considered as a focus in its own right, alongside the hiking trails and cultural sites.

Fishing and bus and rail travel

Fishing is possible in the two community-owned ponds in the Watzlsteg district. Day and weekly permits are available from the tourist information office on presentation of a fishing licence. As permit rules and prices may change, it’s a good idea to check them again before fishing.

Guests in the municipality of Grafenwiesen can use buses and trains free of charge within the GUTi area by showing their guest card. If you plan to use buses or trains, check the current travel conditions before your trip. This keeps the specific requirements—a stay as a guest, the GUTi area and a guest card—part of your planning, rather than treating the benefit as an unrestricted offer.
