Ainring can be planned from several distinct perspectives: the Ainring Moor combines landscape with a notable history of use, the two moorland circular trails call for different amounts of time, and the St. Francis Way, Way of the Cross and open-air stage offer cultural perspectives. When choosing your accommodation, you can first decide whether nature, a longer walk or an event is your main priority.

Moorland and circular trails

The Ainring Moor lies between Ainring and Thundorf, at the foot of the Högl and along the old Roman and Salt Road. Industrial use was followed by renaturation in 2003. The moor provides a habitat for animal and plant species, including some that are extremely rare. Its location, history of use and present-day habitat all form part of the picture of this natural area.

Two named circular trails offer a concrete guide for planning your time. The Small Moor Circuit is 3.26 kilometres long and takes about 50 minutes on foot; the Large Moor Circuit is 6.43 kilometres long and takes about one hour and 40 minutes. The longer loop is therefore almost twice as long and takes roughly twice as much walking time. If your day’s plans allow for a set amount of time, you can compare the figures directly. Walking times are estimates; the distance and duration may change if the route is adjusted.

Trails, local history and culture

The Ainring Ball Mill is part of the Ainring St. Francis Way. Its material links it to many historic Salzburg ball mills: a key component, known as the grinding stone—in other words, the lower part—came from Ainring and was made of Högl sandstone.

The Ainring Way of the Cross tells a different story. It follows a former church path used by worshippers on their way up to the parish church of the time on the Ulrichshögl. The path thus preserves a tangible link to its former use.

The Ainring open-air stage regularly hosts theatre, concerts, morning gatherings and performances of all kinds. The semicircular audience tiers are made of local natural stone and evoke an ancient amphitheatre. If you want a particular performance to be the highlight of your stay, check the event dates in advance.

More leisure options

The Ainring Adventure Pool has a 25,000-square-metre sunbathing lawn, table tennis tables, a basketball court, a children’s playground and a beach volleyball court. Its facilities set it apart clearly from the circular trails and cultural sites. The BGL Golf Club, with an 18-hole championship course, is also located in Weng, a district of the municipality of Ainring.

On a larger scale: Berchtesgadener Land

The wider travel destination of Berchtesgadener Land stretches from the gently rolling Rupertiwinkel in the north to Berchtesgaden National Park on the border with Austria; the biosphere region encompasses the entire district. The national park offers a network of hiking trails and alpine paths spanning 260 kilometres. These regional destinations are on a different scale from the local circular trails in Ainring. In Almbachklamm, the hike crosses 29 bridges and walkways, climbs 320 steps and passes through a tunnel blasted into the rock. Seasonal opening times and weather-related closures may change; check current conditions before your visit. In Ramsau, the roughly 200-metre-long walkway through Wimbachklamm follows steep rock faces via bridges and walkways.
