The castle and trails around Schnabelwaid give you two different starting points for planning your trip: local history on the one hand, and hiking and cycling tours on the other. The wider Bayreuth destination also offers its own landscape, cultural and leisure activities.

Castle History in Schnabelwaid

Schnabelwaid Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1410; it was probably a type of moated castle at the time. The castle is privately owned and inhabited. Its history is a prominent historical theme in the town.

Trails Around the Town

Around Schnabelwaid, about ten kilometres of hiking and cycling trails lead as far as Bayreuth or Pegnitz. Another tour, around 22 km long, runs from Schnabelwaid to Creußen. This means trails around the town and a tour with a named destination are available as different planning options. You can decide based on the approximate distance and your preferred destination. Check the specific route in advance, as individual trail routes may change.

In the Wider Bayreuth Destination

Landscapes and Routes

With its varied, gentle landscapes, Franconian Switzerland characterises the western and southern parts of Bayreuth district. In the north, the Fichtel Mountains shape the landscape with dark forests and fields of granite boulders. Bayreuth district also has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 km of cross-country ski trails, hiking trails and cycling paths. Long-distance and themed cycling routes cross the district, passing through different natural landscapes and showcasing their distinctive features and tourist highlights. Local circular cycling routes add to the network and make it possible to plan shorter, more local routes.

Museums and Caves

The Garden Art Museum at Fantaisie Palace opened in July 2000 as the first museum in Germany dedicated exclusively to the history of garden art. Fantaisie Palace Park brings together design elements from the Rococo, Sensibility and Historicist periods. The Franconian Switzerland Museum in Tüchersfeld is housed in the so-called Judenhof, a complex of buildings dating from the 18th century. The German Camera Museum in Plech has more than 15,000 exhibits.

The Devil’s Cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Sophien Cave offers a different kind of cave experience: during “Sophie at Night,” visitors can explore the three cave chambers at their own pace, without a group tour; lighting effects and music accompany the experience. These different ways of visiting and presentations provide practical points of reference when choosing a cave visit.

Activities and Regional Dining

At the Ochsenkopf, you’ll find well-marked hiking trails, the all-weather “Alpine Coaster” toboggan run, a mountain cart track, the North and South cable cars, and downhill and single-track trails. Winter sports options include a 1,900 m-long south-facing slope and four groomed alpine ski runs; some have snowmaking facilities and floodlighting until 10 p.m. The wider Bayreuth destination therefore offers a range of options for hiking and cycling, as well as winter activities.

Regional food culture offers other points of interest, too: Bayreuth district is known for its many beer gardens, which are usually connected to their own breweries, butcher shops or bakeries. Traditional inns in the district serve Franconian dishes in cosy dining rooms, alongside regional specialities.
