Pottenstein combines a castle and old town with a cave experience, hiking routes and waterside leisure activities. When planning, the Devil’s Cave, which can only be visited on a guided tour, and two hikes with different distances and walking times offer concrete points of reference.
The Castle and Historic Old Town
Pottenstein Castle, more than 1,000 years old, is a landmark of the town and houses a castle museum. It was built on a massive dolomite rock. In the historic old town, the town centre lies within the town walls, and Franconian half-timbered houses shape its character. Pottenstein therefore offers a variety of historic sights: the castle and museum perched on the rock, and the old town defined by its town walls and half-timbered houses.
The Devil’s Cave: Duration and Access
The Devil’s Cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour. A tour lasts 45 to 60 minutes. The cave is about 3,000 metres long; approximately half of its total length is open to the public on a guided tour. Notable features inside include stalactite and stalagmite formations and a complete cave bear skeleton. The cave is well developed and easy to walk through, but has some steps. The duration and steps are useful points to consider when fitting a cave visit into your day’s plans.
Comparing Two Hikes
The Valley and Heights Tour runs from Pottenstein via Schöngrundsee, the Devil’s Cave, Schüttersmühle, the Klumpertal valley, Kühlenfels, Kirchenbirkig and Weidenloh, before returning to Pottenstein. It is about 16 kilometres long and takes approximately four hours. The “On the Roof of Franconian Switzerland” hike also starts and ends in Pottenstein. Its route passes through Haselbrunn, Hohenmirsberg, Püttlach, Oberhauenstein and the Upper Püttlach Valley; it is about 18 kilometres long and takes approximately five and a half hours.
If you are choosing between these two hikes based on the time required, the Valley and Heights Tour is the shorter option. Based on the approximate figures given, the second route is about two kilometres longer and takes around an hour and a half more. The places along the way also show how different the routes are, even though both start and finish in Pottenstein.
Rock Pool, Lake and Toboggan Runs
The Pottenstein Rock Pool is one of Germany’s oldest open-air swimming pools. It includes a swimming area and an idyllic beer garden. Different rules apply at Schöngrundsee: swimming and fishing are not permitted there. Pedal boat rides on the lake in the Weihersbachtal valley are offered as an excursion. There is also a free car park directly beside Schöngrundsee.
In the area around Pottenstein, rock faces and pinnacles carved out by erosion from Franconian dolomite define the landscape of Franconian Switzerland. Another leisure attraction is Pottenstein Adventure Rock, with two toboggan runs. The 1,160-metre-long Frankenrodel runs in a stainless-steel trough; the Frankenbob is ready to go in all weather. These details make it possible to distinguish between the two runs in terms of their length and weather conditions.
