Aufseß combines a 14-kilometer brewery trail with four brewery inns. The trail passes through Aufseß, Sachsendorf, Hochstahl and Heckenhof before returning to Aufseß. The stated walking time is approximately four hours. This lets you plan a day’s hike around a specific distance and time; allow extra time for breaks and stops at inns. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Brewery Trail and Tasting Passport
The trail is linked to four brewery inns. You can get your brewery hiking passport stamped at each stop; visitors who go to all four receive a certificate. If the passport is part of your plans, confirm the participating establishments and passport availability before you travel. For planning your day, remember that the approximate walking time does not include stops at inns and breaks.
Castles and Culture in Aufseß
The villages of Oberaufseß and Unteraufseß are each centered around their castles, which are associated with the historic von Aufseß noble family. Schloss Unteraufseß is associated with guided visits, while Schloss Oberaufseß is associated with theater performances. Check in advance whether guided visits are available and consult the theater schedule.
The options for planning your stay vary: for the hiking trail, the distance and approximate walking time are the key factors; for the passport, the goal is to visit all four stops; and visits to the castles depend on access and the performance schedule. If you are considering an overnight stay in Aufseß, you can plan around whether hiking or a cultural visit will be the focus of your stay.
Hollfeld: Its Own Cultural and Nature Highlights
In the broader destination of Hollfeld, pilgrimages to the Salvatorkirche take place in May and June; these are the only pilgrimages dedicated to Salvator in the Archdiocese of Bamberg. Individual, expert-guided town tours with experienced guides are offered there year-round. A botanical tour in a garden in Hollfeld explains the plant life, lasts about 45 minutes, and is often combined with a town tour. The free leaflet “A Walk Through the Historic Old Town of Hollfeld” contains information and pictures of the buildings and is available from the tourist information office.
In Hollfeld’s upper town, the area around Marienplatz still retains the early medieval character of a citizens’ and hilltop town, as well as the layout of a spur settlement. The late medieval defensive tower of St. Gangolf is attached to the former church, now used as a cultural center. The tower contains an old tower keeper’s apartment and offers a view.
The children’s adventure trail in the Kainach Valley features information boards about flora and fauna, as well as activity stations such as a barefoot path, sound logs and tree trunks to climb. On the way back, a goat enclosure is located beside the trail. The terraced gardens lie on the steep southern slope below Hollfeld’s town wall; plants adapted to a hot, dry climate grow there. These include hardy figs and cacti, native orchids and the rare rock alyssum. Roses and companion plants are in full bloom in June and July. Which plants are visible may vary depending on the season and garden maintenance.
