A 2.1-kilometer section of walking and cycling path was built between Gefrees and Knopfhammer in July 2025. It serves as another section connecting the town of Gefrees to the Eger Cycle Route and the district of Wunsiedel. If you are planning a stay, this adds a specific cycling connection to the hiking trails.

Hiking in Gefrees and the surrounding area

The Westweg is one of the Fichtelgebirgsverein’s five main hiking trails and forms the backbone of a day hike into the Ölschnitztal. The starting point is a rest area for hikers and tennis players on the grounds of Gefrees Tennis Club. This tour is thus clearly described by its starting point and its role in the trail network.

Another option is the Gefrees Circular Hiking Trail 1. It starts at the Hügelwiese hiking car park near the St 2180 and heads east to Vorderer Kapf. From there, the circular route runs via Knopfhammer, Leitenholz and Galgenberg. After crossing Kornbach and the St 2180, it returns to the starting point. If you plan to take this loop, check current trail conditions locally.

Near Gefrees, a blue-and-white waymarked hiking trail runs between Gefrees and Hohe Heide; benches along the way invite you to take a break. Bad Weißenstadt is also only a few kilometres from Gefrees. The town is Bavaria’s 22nd spa town and broadens the picture beyond the immediate trail network.

Grünstein: History at the Rocky Outcrop

Around 900 years ago, a motte on the rocky outcrop of Grünstein Castle ruins offered the local inhabitants protection from marauding bands. The historical connection is thus specifically tied to Grünstein: the motte served to protect the inhabitants. For travel planning, this historical point can be combined with the trails in Gefrees without conflating the two topics.

More to explore in the Bayreuth destination

The wider Bayreuth destination offers additional cultural and landscape attractions. In Bayreuth district, the Franconian Switzerland, with its varied, gentle scenery, shapes the western and southern parts, while the Fichtel Mountains, with their dark forests and granite boulder fields, define the north. The district’s landscapes can therefore be considered as a distinct regional focus, separate from the trails around Gefrees.

Route planning in Bayreuth district also covers a wider area: it has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, hiking trails and cycle routes. Long-distance and themed cycle routes cross the district, passing through different natural landscapes and leading to their special features and tourist highlights. Local circular cycle routes add density to the network and make it possible to plan shorter routes.

Culture enthusiasts will find a range of attractions in the Bayreuth destination. Fantaisie Palace Park brings together design elements from the Rococo, Sentimentalism and Historicism periods. The Garden Art Museum at Fantaisie Palace opened in July 2000 as the first German museum at the time devoted exclusively to the history of garden art. The Franconian Switzerland Museum in Tüchersfeld is housed in the so-called Judenhof, a complex of buildings dating from the 18th century; the German Camera Museum in Plech contains more than 15,000 exhibits.

Cave visits offer different experiences: the Devil’s Cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour. At “Sophie at Night” in Sophien Cave, by contrast, visitors explore the three cave chambers at their own pace, without a group tour; lighting effects and music accompany the experience. At the Ochsenkopf, the outdoor activities include well-marked hiking trails, the Alpine Coaster, a mountain-cart track, the Nord and Süd gondola lifts, and downhill and single-track trails. Winter sports options include a 1,900-metre south-facing ski run and four groomed Alpine pistes; some have snowmaking facilities and floodlighting until 10 p.m.

Regional food culture is also part of what Bayreuth district has to offer: the area is known for its many beer gardens, often linked to in-house breweries, butcher shops or bakeries. Traditional inns serve Franconian food in cosy dining rooms and offer regional specialities. When planning an overnight stay, it helps to decide on your preferred focus: the trails and history of Gefrees, or a broader cultural, landscape and culinary itinerary in the Bayreuth destination.
