In Kochel am See, you can combine a visit to an art museum with time outdoors. The Franz Marc Museum displays works by Franz Marc and his fellow artists of the Blue Rider movement in dialogue with modern and contemporary art. The museum’s sculpture park brings art and nature together in the open air. This gives you two distinct starting points for planning your trip: a clearly defined museum focus and trails that take in the lake, the Loisach, and the moor.

Museum and seasonal lake cruise

From Easter to October, the motor vessel Herzogstand calls at the Franz Marc Museum landing stage; during these months, you can combine a lake cruise with a museum visit. On cruises on Lake Kochel, passengers can also visit lakeside attractions such as the Franz Marc Museum and the Walchensee hydroelectric power station. If you plan to make the cruise a fixed part of your stay, check the schedule for your date.

Cycling routes with different destinations

The 47.97 km Art Loop starts at the Franz Marc Museum and follows the cycle path toward Schlehdorf, continuing through GroĂźweil to Murnau and the Schlossmuseum. The E-mountain bike tour to the Herzogstand mountain inn (1,575 m) takes a different route: it starts at Kochel am See station and heads toward Lake Walchen. The two tours differ in both type and stated destination: the Art Loop leads to the Schlossmuseum in Murnau, while the E-mountain bike tour heads toward Lake Walchen and the Herzogstand mountain inn.

Trails along the Loisach and Kochelsee Moor

For a trail with views of the moor, the Loisach-Moor Loop starts at Kochel am See station. It first leads to the Loisach bridge and then follows a flat fitness trail along the Loisach. Along the way, there are views across the Kochelsee Moor, a habitat for numerous plant and animal species; exercises can be done on the trail. The Short Loop offers a different focus: it follows a flat path along the Loisach, past meadows and fields. On the way back to Kochel, there are views of Jochberg, Herzogstand, and Heimgarten in clear weather. The difference is clear if you’re choosing a route for the views: the Loisach-Moor Loop looks out over the Kochelsee Moor, while the Short Loop offers mountain scenery—in clear weather.

Felsenweg: route and return journey

The tour from Kochel am See station follows Lake Kochel to the Walchensee hydroelectric power station in Altjoch, a district of Kochel, and then takes the scenic Felsenweg along the lakeshore. The path is cut into a 300 m-high cliff on the southern shore. To return to Kochel, you can take a motor vessel across Lake Kochel or catch an MVV bus. Before planning, check whether these return options are available if you wish to use either one.

Finding your way at the station

The Kochel am See Tourist Information office is located right inside the station building. Its digital information terminal outside provides event information, a map of cycling and hiking trails, and a selection of the most important brochures around the clock. If you’re using the event or trail information to plan your trip, check the details provided before you travel.
