A viewpoint on the Rotwand Circuit opens up views of the Jachental valley and the mountain range to the north, from Jochberg via Benediktenwand to Brauneck. Jachenau also offers a range of options: a hike that passes the Baroque Church of St. Nicholas, cycling tours at Lake Walchensee, and seasonal winter activities. Which of these shapes your plans depends on whether you want to focus on mountain scenery, cycling, or activities in snow and ice.
Rotwand Circuit: from mountain forest to viewpoint
The Rotwand Circuit leads from the hamlet of Höfen along a partly steep ravine path through mountain forest to the open area of Grabenalm and onward to a balcony-like viewpoint on the Rotwand’s steep northwest face. From there, views stretch across the Jachental valley and the mountain range to the north, from Jochberg via Benediktenwand to Brauneck. The route alternates between mountain forest, open alpine pasture and the viewpoint. The partly steep ravine path is also a specific aspect to take into account when planning your trip.
Church and hiking trails
The Jachenau Flower Walk passes the Baroque Church of St. Nicholas, which stands on a small hill. This makes the church a cultural landmark right along the route. By contrast, the Rotwand Circuit leads through mountain forest to the open area of Grabenalm and onward to the viewpoint. If you are choosing between these two hiking options, consider the difference: the Flower Walk features the church and Baroque architecture, while the Rotwand Circuit offers changing scenery and long-distance views.
Cycling tours at Lake Walchensee
Cyclists can choose between two options described in different ways. The approximately 40-kilometer cycling tour around Lake Walchensee is family-friendly and follows paved roads throughout. It starts at the SchĂĽtzenhaus in the center of Jachenau, below the church. Check for current traffic restrictions before setting out. A second cycling tour, approximately 70 kilometers long, runs from Jachenau along the southern shore of Lake Walchensee toward Wallgau. Check current route conditions for this tour as well. The 40-kilometer loop and the longer ride toward Wallgau therefore differ both in distance and route.
Winter activities and seasonal conditions
The Jachenau ski lift is in the MĂĽhle district. It is about 450 meters long and has two runs and a hut. Operating availability may vary by season; check that the lift is operating before making firm plans to use it. The natural ice rink in Jachenau was completed in 1987 and is open for ice skating, ice hockey and curling. Outdoor use depends on ice conditions. For the ski lift, seasonal availability is the key consideration; for the natural ice rink, it is the condition of the ice.
