Bad Tölz can be discovered in two different ways: through its cityscape, with its architectural and cultural history, and through trails that explore themes such as nature and crafts. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether you mainly want to explore the city’s history or set aside time specifically for a themed trail or a circular route.

City History and Culture in Bad Tölz

Large gabled houses dating from the 18th century line Marktstraße; many of their façades are decorated with Lüftlmalerei. The combination of striking architectural forms and painted façades gives the street a distinctive architectural character. Audio guides let you explore Bad Tölz’s sights at your own pace. Examples include historic Marktstraße and Kalvarienberg—two different perspectives on the city, from its façade designs to its religious sites.

Kalvarienberg includes the Garden of Gethsemane, a Way of the Cross and Golgotha Hill with its Prison Chapel. It also includes the Kalvarienberg Church, with its twin towers, and Leonhardi Chapel. The many features that make up Kalvarienberg mean it is more than a single church building: several religious sites and structures are part of the same complex.

The Bad Tölz City Museum broadens the perspective to encompass the art and cultural history of the entire Isarwinkel region, as well as its cultural heritage of the Leonhardifahrt. The Bad Tölz Leonhardifahrt passes through the city’s streets and lanes on November 6. If the date falls on a weekend, the event may be rescheduled. If you are travelling specifically for it, check the exact event date before booking.

The Tölz Kurhaus was inaugurated in June 1914 and provides an atmospheric setting for concerts, theatre, weddings and conferences. If your trip depends on a particular event, check its date in advance.

Themed Trails and Green Spaces

The Flößerweg runs along the Isar in Bad Tölz and connects city history, nature and crafts. Information boards, interactive stations and original sites invite you to explore. Its focus is on the interplay of these themes and on the stops along the route.

The Geokulturpfad offers a different kind of tour: it is a 30-kilometre circular route that you can explore in its entirety or in stages, on foot or by bicycle. Integrated into the existing network of hiking trails, it offers various ways to experience the route. By contrast, the Flößerweg presents its themes through information boards, interactive stations and original sites, and no route length is specified for it here.

If you are looking for a green setting rather than a themed trail, Gabriel-von-Seidl-Kurpark offers something different: the park features a pond, extensive lawns and mature trees. These features set it apart from the themed routes and offer another way to shape your stay in Bad Tölz.

Travelling by Train

Trains depart from Bad Tölz station at regular intervals towards Lenggries and towards Holzkirchen or Munich. Check the current timetable before departure. When planning your trip, you can take the train connections into account while deciding whether to focus on the city’s history, a themed trail or the 30-kilometre circular route.
