For a stay focused on cultural history, Elfershausen offers three specific points of interest: Erthalschloss, a stone arch bridge over the Franconian Saale, and the tower of the parish church of the Assumption of Mary. Other architectural and hiking destinations are located in other parts of the municipality. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between visiting Elfershausen itself and exploring a wider area.
Architectural History in the Town
The stone arch bridge over the Franconian Saale dates from the 13th century. The tower of the parish church of the Assumption of Mary has three storeys and dates from the early 14th century. Both structures offer an impression of different historical periods.
Erthalschloss consists of two parts: the pavilion, used as a residence, and the agricultural building, used as an outbuilding. Christoph Heinrich von Erthal had the pavilion rebuilt in 1562. The two-storey Baroque building has a raised ground floor and a mansard roof. Together with the bridge and church tower, it offers a comparison between medieval bridge building, church architecture and later palace architecture.
Other Architectural and Hiking Destinations in the Municipality
There are historic structures outside Elfershausen itself, too. In Langendorf, the origins of St. Vitus Church date back to 1025. A foundation stone outside, to the right of the main entrance, indicates this.
Machtilshausen is home to the Schreinersch House, a historic building dating from 1488, featuring late Gothic half-timbering. It is considered one of the oldest farmhouses in Bavaria. The church in Langendorf and the farmhouse in Machtilshausen add further, clearly located examples to the architectural history of the market town.
In Machtilshausen, the local lime kilns are the centrepiece of the KALK + KULTOUR hikes. The KALK + KULTOUR hiking trail offers scenic views and runs along vineyards and through forests. This makes it possible to combine a visit to historic buildings with a dedicated hiking activity in the municipality.
Mountain-bike routes pass through parts of the municipalities of Elfershausen, Aura, Euerdorf, Ramsthal and Sulzthal. Routes in the market town of Elfershausen are marked. Check the latest route information and markings before setting out.
Festival and Practical Planning
The Market and Local Heritage Festival is held every year around the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on 15 August in the grounds of the castle in Elfershausen. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the programme in advance, as the details may vary.
