Bad Bocklet owes its reputation as a spa town to the discovery of the Stahlquelle (Iron Spring) in 1724 by Johann-Georg Schöppner, the parish priest of Aschach at the time. The Stahlquelle is also known as the Balthasar Neumann Spring. This 300-year-old spring is located in Bad Bocklet’s spa park. This gives the spa town’s history a tangible setting, rather than leaving it as just a date.
Spa Park and the Franconian Saale
The extensive spa park borders the Franconian Saale. A Saale meander was created there in 2018, where you can dip your feet in the water. The history of the spring and the river landscape come together in the same local setting: the spring is in the spa park, and the meander offers the chance to dip your feet in the water.
Local History in Pictures
“A Journey Through Time in Bad Bocklet” is a publicly accessible walking route featuring framed historical postcards from Bad Bocklet. The postcards document 130 years of local history and the development of selected buildings. For anyone interested in how a place changes over time, the appeal lies in this longer historical perspective and the focus on individual buildings.
Aschach Castle: Museums with Different Themes
At the Graf-Luxburg Museum in Aschach Castle, you can visit the former living quarters of the von Luxburg family and the workrooms of their servants. Multimedia, audio and interactive stations complement the exhibition. Selected exhibits at the Folklore Museum offer insight into the everyday lives of the Rhön’s rural population between 1850 and 1950, showing how people lived, housed themselves and made a living. At the School Museum, you can see materials from schools in Lower Franconia and a schoolroom furnished with original items.
Individual Historical Sites
St. Lawrence’s Church is the oldest church in Bad Bocklet. Auxiliary Bishop Eucharius Sang consecrated it in 1620; its tower is a Julius Echter tower. The 1620 consecration adds a specific historical landmark to the broader perspective of the “Journey Through Time.”

The Wider Area: Bad Kissingen
The district of Bad Kissingen lies on the southern edge of the Rhön. Its landscape brings together the foothills and open expanses of the Rhön, a long tradition of winegrowing and valuable mineral water; the Schondratal is one of Franconia’s most beautiful unspoiled forest valleys. The A 7 between Fulda and Würzburg and the A 71 between Erfurt and Schweinfurt cross the district from north to south. Since January 1, 2025, the district of Bad Kissingen has been part of the Mainfranken public transport association (NVM).
