Heimbuchenthal is located in the upper Elsava Valley, in the heart of Spessart Nature Park. The area offers different focal points for planning your visit: the “Between Heaven & Hell” European Cultural Trail, with its cultural and historical sites, as well as routes and leisure activities along the Elsava. The lengths and destinations of the cultural trail loops can help you choose where to stay based on what you would like to explore.

Cultural Trail and Industrial History

The “Between Heaven & Hell” European Cultural Trail starts at the old railway station in Heimbuchenthal. It includes a 5 km loop from St. Martin’s Church to the “Lady of the Mountains” chapel, as well as a 6 km loop from the old railway station to Höllhammer and Heimathenhof. The second loop is therefore one kilometre longer and leads to different named destinations. The meadow path between the two endpoints of the cultural trail is 1.5 km long.

Along the cultural trail, you can see reconstructed historic irrigation systems; the trail also passes Kernsmühle. Höllhammer is a historic industrial monument associated with a self-sufficient iron-hammer village established in the 18th century under the direction of the Rexroth family. The cultural trail thus brings together traces of historic irrigation and the history of the iron-hammer village.

Routes and Activities along the Elsava

A walking and cycling path runs along the Elsava in Heimbuchenthal. There are three Nordic walking courses around the town, and designated mountain bike trails can also be explored. The sports and leisure options also include Spessartweg 1 and Spessartweg 2. The Kurparksee, part of Heimbuchenthal’s landscape, has a barefoot trail. These offer different starting points for planning, from riverside paths and Nordic walking to mountain bike trails and activities at Kurparksee.

Leisure Activities and Nature Watching

The motorhome site in Heimbuchenthal is located right by the Elsava. The “Pedalwelt” interactive exhibition, with its fun course and soccer pitch, is nearby. A miniature golf course and an adventure golf course are both within easy walking distance of the motorhome site.

In recent years, beaver activity has increasingly been observed along the Elsava between Leitwiese in Mespelbrunn and Millionenweg in Heimbuchenthal. This information adds a nature-related aspect of the river landscape to the area’s cultural history.

Additional Routes in the Wider Aschaffenburg Destination

The wider Aschaffenburg destination offers additional routes for regional planning. The family-friendly MainRadweg runs through the Main Valley in Aschaffenburg district and is well signposted. The Kahltal-Spessart cycle route through the district’s scenic landscapes is also signposted. In the eastern High Spessart area of the district, four challenging cross-country routes are signposted as Bikewald-Spessart routes. Check local route conditions there.

For hiking, Spessartwege 1, 2 and 3 run through Aschaffenburg district; the German Hiking Association has awarded them the “Qualitätswege Wanderbares Deutschland” quality trail designation four times. The Eselsweg is a multi-day hike in the district. These regional routes add further options to the local possibilities in Heimbuchenthal, explicitly as part of the wider Aschaffenburg destination.
