In Weiltingen, several attractions offer different ways to explore the town’s history: a network of walking trails, historic churches and a museum with regional collections. There are also opportunities to observe nature, a recreational pond and a cycle route that passes through two districts. When planning your visit, you can decide whether you would prefer to discover history along the trails, in sacred buildings or through objects in the collections—or focus on spending time outdoors.

Traces of history along the walking trail

The “Searching for Traces in Weiltingen” trail consists of a large circular route with smaller themed trails branching off: the Limes Trail, the Burial Mounds Trail, the Baumhof and Hedgerow Trail, and a Spring Trail. As a history trail, the route follows the traces of local history throughout the municipality. At prominent points, information boards with text and images share interesting facts about nature, culture and history. The different themed trails give the circular route a variety of focal points, rather than centering on just one aspect of the area.

The Pond Trail offers a specific connection with nature: from there, you can observe a stork’s nest on the disused chimney of a sawmill. This brings together historical themes and a view of the animal world along the trail. Those particularly interested in local history will find information along the route; nature enthusiasts can focus on the Pond Trail and the nest visible there.

Churches from different periods

St. Leonhard and St. Peter tell the story of different periods in Weiltingen’s church history. St. Leonhard was built in 1490 as a pilgrimage chapel with Gothic frescoes and was used as a cemetery chapel from 1621. The origins of St. Peter date back to the 9th century; the present building dates from around 1280 onward. A special feature of the parish church is its winged altar from 1514. Its closed wings display panel paintings by the Nördlingen painter Hans Schäufelin. St. Leonhard thus reflects its original function as a pilgrimage chapel, while St. Peter brings together different historical details in its architecture and altar.

Museum, traditional costumes and part of the castle wall

The Traditional Costume and Local History Museum is housed in the former tithe barn. Its collection on local history spans the Celtic hillfort, the Frankish knights’ castle and the residence of the Dukes of Württemberg. The museum’s traditional costume room displays wedding, dance and church costumes from the Rococo and Biedermeier periods. One part of the collection focuses on local history, while another is devoted to clothing and festive culture.

A section of the wall of the former castle complex is also among Weiltingen’s historic structures. It was extensively renovated and opened in June 2016. The wall has an integrated grandstand and can be used for events. When choosing cultural attractions, you can therefore distinguish between churches, the museum and a historic structure that can also host events.

Recreational pond and cycle route

Weiltingen’s recreational pond offers a chance to cool off in summer. Facilities include a beach volleyball court, a tree-lined sunbathing lawn and a fire pit with a grill grate. This offers a different focus from the historic attractions: here, time by the water and the listed recreational facilities take center stage. The summer availability is an important part of what the pond offers.

For cycling plans, the Wörnitz cycle route is another option: the route is 107 kilometers long and passes through Weiltingen’s districts of Wörnitzhofen and Ruffenhofen. It can be considered separately from the local themed trails, without treating the two routes as one and the same. When looking for accommodation in Weiltingen, you can prioritize your interests: local history explored through the walking trail and churches, collections and traditional costumes, a summer visit to the pond, or the cycle route through the districts all offer different starting points for planning your trip.
