The Wettringen–Gailnau nature trail combines themes of nature with history; St Peter and Paul’s fortified church and the local history museum offer their own cultural highlights. This gives Wettringen a range of different topics to explore, from landscape issues to domestic culture in centuries past.

Wettringen–Gailnau Nature Trail

The nature trail provides information about natural features such as landslides, the source of the Tauber and traditional orchards. It also covers cultural and historical topics: Celtic finds, Gailnau Castle and witch trials in Wettringen and Wörnitz. Its scope therefore ranges from natural phenomena to archaeological finds and local history. The learning site along the nature trail is suitable for children of primary school age and up. There is also a specific access note to bear in mind when planning your visit: the Gailnau Castle / Gailnauer Berg point of interest on the trail is not accessible. Check before visiting whether access arrangements have changed.

Landscape and orientation

Wettringen’s Obergailnau district lies on a plateau between hills. The source of the Tauber is also featured on the nature trail; several signs along the road point to the source in Wettringen. This distinguishes two different references to nature: the description of Obergailnau’s topographic setting and a specific natural landmark indicated by the signs.

Church, museum and market day

St Peter and Paul’s fortified church in Wettringen has a carved altar from the Riemenschneider school. The Wettringen Local History Museum focuses on everyday life: it illustrates the domestic culture of the 18th and 19th centuries with objects and tools from farm life, old measures and weights made of oak, and a treasure from the school days of the time. Visits can be arranged by telephone. The two places offer different perspectives on cultural history: sacred woodcarving on the one hand, domestic and everyday culture on the other. Be sure to arrange your museum visit by telephone.

A recurring event in Wettringen is the livestock and traders’ market. It takes place every year on the first Saturday in March. If you want to plan your trip around the market, confirm the date locally.

Getting to the nature trail

The Wettringen–Gailnau nature trail can be reached from Wettringen market square by bus routes 807, 817 and 818. As bus routes and services may change, check the current connections before travelling. Parking is available on site at both the start and end points of the trail; take local conditions into account. For planning purposes, both bus access from the market square and parking at the two end points are relevant.

Another cultural highlight in the wider Ansbach destination

In the wider Ansbach destination, the Franconia Literary Trail offers a different thematic highlight. The 2.2 km accessible circular trail runs around the town fortifications of Wolframs-Eschenbach. Its 15 information boards focus on authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works deal with Franconia. This adds a literary perspective on Franconia to the Ansbach destination, distinct in subject matter from Wettringen’s nature and local history themes.
