Ornbau brings together a range of options for a stay: the Bible Garden outside the town walls, a swimming area in the district of Gern, and routes that pass through the town or start here. This lets you choose between a cultural theme, time by the water and tours through several towns. An annual event in front of the parish church also marks a specific date in the calendar.

Bible Garden and seasonal event

The Bible Garden in Ornbau was created in 2011 by a team of volunteers with support from the town of Ornbau. It is located outside the town walls. Its origins give it a different focus from the routes: here, a landscaped garden takes center stage, while on a tour, the route and its themes shape the day’s plans.

The Easter Fountain is another seasonal highlight: it is decorated in front of the parish church in Ornbau every year on the Saturday before Palm Sunday. If you want to experience this tradition, the exact date matters, not just choosing a day in spring. The Bible Garden and the Easter Fountain are therefore two distinct points of interest: one has a specific year of origin, while the other takes place at the same time each year.

Swimming area in Gern

There is a swimming area on the Altmühl feeder canal in the district of Gern. This adds a spot by the water to Ornbau’s cultural and route-based offerings. A visit here is clearly different from a tour: the focus is on the swimming area, not a route through several towns. Before swimming, check the latest bathing conditions, including water quality.

Cycling routes with different highlights

For a multi-day route, Ornbau is part of the 36-kilometer “Mönchswaldfüchse” extra route. The circular route passes through Merkendorf, Mitteleschenbach, Ornbau, Weidenbach and Wolframs-Eschenbach and is designed to take two to three days. The stated duration helps you plan it as a multi-day option. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Ornbau is also on Route 1, marked with green signs, of the three Meister (r)Ade(l)bar cycling loops. Developed by the LBV Altmühlsee Environmental Education Center, the routes lead to stork nests in the central Altmühl Valley. Information boards and interactive elements share facts about the white stork. So, if you want to combine cycling with a nature theme, this route has a different focus from the Mönchswaldfüchse route, whose defining feature is its multi-day circular course through five towns.

The 38-kilometer Altmühlsee Cycle Route No. 8 offers another option: it is a circular route that starts in Ornbau and goes via Weidenbach, Merkendorf, Wolframs-Eschenbach and Mitteleschenbach to Muhr am See. When choosing a route, you can compare the stated distance, duration and course: the Mönchswaldfüchse route is designed for two to three days, while the Altmühlsee Cycle Route is characterized by its 38-kilometer distance and circular course. The stork routes, in turn, have a thematic focus. Which details matter for your plans depends on whether you are looking for a multi-day tour, a specific circular route or a route focused on the white stork.

More to explore in the wider Ansbach travel region

The wider Ansbach travel region also has cultural attractions in other towns. The Franconian Literature Trail in Wolframs-Eschenbach is a 2.2-kilometer, accessible circular route around the town’s fortifications. Its 15 information boards focus on authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works deal with Franconia. The route length and information boards offer two useful reference points: the distance and the literary focus.

The “wiegen & messen” Museum in Königshofen offers a different way to explore culture. It displays more than 4,000 items, including historic scales and their weights, measuring rods, yardsticks, and vessels for measuring grain. In the wider Ansbach travel region, historic everyday objects and measuring equipment are another option alongside literature and routes.
