Neuendettelsau combines cultural history with a range of ways to explore the town and its surroundings. The castle, museum and exhibition each focus on different aspects of history; a digital town tour, hiking trails and cycle routes vary in duration, length and theme. When planning, it is therefore worth considering whether you prefer a compact tour, longer routes or a themed cycling tour.

Castle, Museum and Exhibition

The oldest parts of the castle in Neuendettelsau date back to around 1200. The Löhe-Zeit-Museum shows what life was like during the period when Wilhelm Löhe was a pastor in Neuendettelsau in the mid-19th century. The castle and museum thus turn the focus to different historical periods: early architectural features and life in a later era.

The Löhe Trail also explores the town’s history. Its stops offer the chance to learn about the history of diaconal work and the Neuendettelsau community in Wilhelm Löhe’s footsteps. The “einBlick” mission exhibition offers a different perspective: art and everyday objects, displays, information panels and videos provide insights into the lives of people in Papua New Guinea, Africa, Asia and Brazil. The exhibition also offers opportunities to meet people from the partner churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria.

Town Tour and Walking Routes

The digital town tour starts in the town centre and leads past various stops. It takes about an hour and a half and covers approximately one kilometre on foot. The tour is available free of charge through the Actionbound app. Check that the digital tour is available again before your trip. With its approximate duration and length, it is a clearly defined activity for exploring Neuendettelsau stop by stop.

The well-developed, signposted network of hiking trails offers a different range of options. These include circular routes for walks and shorter hikes, as well as longer routes between the districts and to the Kernfranken partner communities. This lets you choose between a circular route and a longer connection, without assuming that all routes follow the same format. The Löhe Trail combines walking with a historical focus on Wilhelm Löhe, diaconal work and the community.

Cycle Routes with Different Themes

Neuendettelsau is part of the Kernfranken Municipal Alliance area, which the 67.6-kilometre Kernfranken Cycle Route circles. The route follows cycle paths and low-traffic side roads. The Hohenzollern Adventure Cycle Route has a different focus: its historical theme. Neuendettelsau is one of 13 places along the approximately 95-kilometre route between Nuremberg and Ansbach, which offers insights into Hohenzollern history. The route lengths and themes give you two different points of reference when choosing a cycling tour. Check route conditions and details before setting off.

Getting There and Planning

Neuendettelsau has its own railway station. From there, nearby towns, the city of Ansbach and the greater Nuremberg-Fürth-Erlangen area are quick and easy to reach. Together with the digital town tour, walking routes and cycle routes, this offers options on different scales: from a tour of approximately one kilometre to a regional cycling trip. Plan according to whether you mainly want to visit Neuendettelsau’s cultural sites or set aside more time for longer routes.
