Lehrberg combines medieval architectural history with hiking and cycling options that vary in length and mode of travel. The townscape tells a story of churches, a chapel ruin and historic gable styles; the network of routes ranges from the 15.2-kilometre Lehrberger Weg to the approximately 56-kilometre NorA cycle route. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around these two main themes: local history or tours through the countryside.

Churches and Local History

The ruins of St. Jobst Church are located on the Kappellbuck in Lehrberg. They are Lehrberg’s landmark and preserve a chancel tower dating from 1430. The ruins originate from an expiatory chapel built around 1430; the hill on which the chapel stood is still called Kapellenberg (Chapel Hill).

St. Margarethen is also one of Lehrberg’s attractions. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1059 and took on its present form in 1731. The two dates mark different points in its history: its early written mention and the later form of the church.

In the historic town centre, houses with gables facing different directions stand out. This architectural feature is attributed to the town’s former administration by the Archbishops of Eichstätt and the Lords of Birkenfels. The shape of the houses thus adds another perspective on Lehrberg’s history alongside its churches.

Hiking Trails and Cycle Route

The Lehrberger Weg is a 15.2-kilometre hike. Near Lehrberg, it leads into a wooded area; along the way, you can leave the signposted trail and climb the Kappellbuck in Lehrberg. This optional detour can be factored into your route planning.

Lehrberg is surrounded by numerous marked hiking trails through the hilly, forested Frankenhöhe Nature Park. Another kind of tour is the approximately 56-kilometre NorA cycle route, which connects Lehrberg with Oberdachstetten, Rügland, Weihenzell and Flachslanden. Choosing a route therefore depends on both the mode of travel and the scale: a named hiking trail versus a longer cycling connection between several towns.

Landscape and Regional Context

A Keuper stratum, also known as the Lehrberg Formation, occurs in the area around Lehrberg. This geological term adds a feature of the landscape in the wider surroundings to the picture of the town’s churches and houses.
