Gebsattel combines marked hiking trails and signposted cycling routes with a multifaceted local history. The origins of Gebsattel Castle date back to the 11th century; at the same time, churches in Gebsattel and Kirnberg display different architectural and artistic features. This offers more than one possible focus when planning your trip: outdoor trails, historic buildings or a mixture of both. The route information distinguishes between paths that pass through Gebsattel and those that begin in the immediate vicinity.

Hiking trails and nature themes

The landscape of the Frankenhöhe in Gebsattel and its districts is varied. The marked hiking trails include the Berglesweg. Along the trail between Gebsattel and Kirnberg are four information boards covering the importance of wild bees, pond habitats, the distinctive features of a sunken lane and aspects of the Wolfsberg nature reserve that are worthy of protection. The trail thus combines nature topics, a distinctive landscape feature and nature conservation, rather than focusing on just one subject area. If you plan to hike the Berglesweg specifically, check local conditions before setting out.

Cycling routes through Gebsattel

Several signposted cycling routes pass through Gebsattel or begin in the immediate vicinity. The Romantic Road cycle route and many regional cycling routes pass through the village. This gives you two different points of reference: some routes run directly through Gebsattel, while others start nearby. This distinction is useful when choosing a specific route; check the current route before setting off, as routes may change.

Castle and churches: different periods

The origins of Gebsattel Castle and its present-day building should be considered separately in time. Its origins certainly date back to the 11th century, during the time of the Counts of Rothenburg-Komburg. The present building, however, is thought to date from the 15th century. The information therefore describes two different stages in the building’s history: its early origins and the later, only probable date of the present building. The W12 hiking trail passes by the castle in Gebsattel.

The churches also offer different points of interest. St. Laurentius Church in Gebsattel features various architectural styles; in 1108, it was donated to Comburg Abbey as the Counts of Rothenburg-Comburg’s own parish church. The Protestant St. Martin’s Church features modern glass art. In Kirnberg, a village in the municipality of Gebsattel, stands St. Mary’s: a hall church with a polygonal choir and a west tower dating from the 13th or 14th century. Together, the three churches illustrate different aspects: architectural styles, modern glass art and a clearly defined historic architectural form.

Plan your journey

The railway station and the motorway exit are two separate points of reference in the surrounding area. Rothenburg ob der Tauber railway station, with a VGN connection, is 3 km from Gebsattel; the Rothenburg ob der Tauber exit on the A7 is also 3 km away. If travelling via the A7, the exit mentioned is the appropriate point of reference.
