Tauberzell lies right on the banks of the Tauber; the Romantic Road runs directly through the village. Anyone looking to combine the history of winegrowing with hiking and architectural heritage will find plenty to explore here: the Hasennestle vineyard sites, St. Vitus Parish Church and trails through the vineyards.

Winegrowing and Cultural Landscape

Tauberzell looks back on over 800 years of winemaking tradition and still preserves the character of a Franconian Häckerdorf, a traditional small winegrowers’ village. The Hasennestle protected heritage site includes the vineyard locations Unterer Tauberweg, Berge and Untere Setzberge. They were already being cultivated in the 13th century and were once lined with dry-stone walls and large heaps of stones cleared from the fields, before being replanted in 1983/84. The name Hasennestle is therefore used in two contexts: for a protected vineyard area and for a circular hiking trail.

Historic Buildings

The listed Evangelical Lutheran Parish Church of St. Vitus is a Neoclassical hall church. It was built in 1806 to plans by Johann Dietrich Carl Spindler, the Ansbach building inspector. The stone bridge in Tauberzell is also listed. Dating from the 18th century, it has four spans and covered piers. Together, they offer a comparison between two different architectural forms and periods of construction. A hall church is a church space without side aisles; Neoclassical describes the style. These terms distinguish the floor plan from the design.

Hikes and Views

The Hasennestle circular hiking trail starts at St. Vitus Church, winds through the vineyards and offers views of Tauberzell and the Tauber Valley, from the HoldermĂĽhle to Tauberscheckenbach. The circular route thus connects vineyard scenery with named viewpoints. The Lachenweg is another option for a hike with specific distance and elevation details: it starts in Tauberzell, is easy and about 2.7 km long. It takes around an hour to walk, with both the ascent and descent measuring 115 m. You can choose between the Hasennestle, with its vineyard and valley views, and the Lachenweg, with clear planning details. Check the route details before your hike.

Wine, Culture and Special Occasions

The Hirtenscheune hosts smaller cultural events, such as musical evenings and poetry readings. As the program may change, check the dates in advance of your stay. Tauberzell is a planned stop for a leisurely break on cycling tours through the Romantic Tauber Valley. Wine hikes along the Tauberzell Wine Educational Trail can be booked through the Tauberzell Local History and Winegrowing Association or the Adelshofen municipality. Confirm current contact details in advance, as they may change. Both civil and church wedding ceremonies can also be held in a vineyard in Tauberzell. Make the specific arrangements in advance with the relevant local contacts.

Getting There

Tauberzell is easy to reach from the A7 motorway via the Uffenheim-Langensteinach or Bad Windsheim exits. For your journey, it is advisable to check the route and road conditions on the day of travel.
