An alternative route along the Isen and the landscape around the Isen Reservoir give Winhöring a clear connection to nature and walking trails. This means two interests come to the fore when choosing your destination: a specific route or the lakeside landscape with its orchard meadow and waterbirds.
Routes along the Isen and through Winhöring
An alternative route to Schokoripperl crosses the Isen. On the other bank, it runs either through the “Eichenwäldchen” natural area or along the shore of the Isen Reservoir through Winhöring’s western district to the Isen bridge. Conditions can vary; take this into account when planning your trip.
Isen Reservoir: Water, Meadow and Waterbirds
The Isen Reservoir serves as a water buffer for the turbines at the power plant, which was built in the early 1920s; this enables the plant to generate electricity year-round. An orchard meadow lines the north shore. Various waterbirds stay at the Isen Reservoir throughout the year, although individual sightings may vary. Nature and energy history meet here in the different features of the same body of water.
Altötting as the wider regional setting
The Altötting district lies on the Inn and Salzach rivers within the broader destination of Altötting. Its landscape is characterized by a plain about 10 kilometers wide, through which the Inn flows and which is bordered to the north and south by lush green hills. Together with the Mühldorf district, Altötting district is part of the Inn-Salzach tourism region. Visitor information for the region includes cycling and pilgrimage routes, museums and bathing lakes, among other things. The wider region’s range of themes thus extends from landscape and nature to culture and waterside recreation.
Protected areas and cycling routes
Nature conservation in Altötting district includes the internationally important wetland and nature reserve “Unterer Inn zwischen Haiming und Neuhaus.” It provides a habitat for migrating, overwintering and breeding marsh and waterbirds; more than 25 species associated with water and wetlands breed there. Another protected area is Dachlwand on the Inn, northwest of Marktl. It covers parts of the municipalities of Marktl, Erlbach and Perach, spans about 206 hectares and was upgraded from a landscape conservation area to a nature reserve in 1986.
A popular variant of the Inn Cycle Route runs from Neuötting through Altötting and the extensive Öttinger Forest to the ducal town of Burghausen, then past the confluence of the Inn and Salzach rivers to Marktl. The section in the Inn-Salzach region is a good 75 kilometers long. As detours may be in place, it is advisable to check the route before setting off.
