The SKW-Siedlung History Trail, the Schnabling viewpoint and the Alz river route offer three distinct experiences in Garching a.d.Alz. You can choose between local history, scenic views and an activity on the water. The historical focus is particularly tangible on the trail through the settlement: it brings the development of historic buildings to life.
History, views and the Alz
The “SKW-Siedlung History Trail” opened in May 2023 to mark the settlement’s 100th anniversary. It leads through different parts of the settlement and brings the development of its historic buildings to life. Its central theme is therefore not a single building, but the development of historic buildings in several locations. If you are interested in local history, this gives you a clear starting point when choosing your stay.
Schnabling is a viewpoint in Garching a.d.Alz. This makes it different from the history-focused trail: at Schnabling, the view is the main attraction, while the trail focuses on the development of the settlement’s buildings.
The Alz river route from Trostberg to Garching a.d.Alz is suitable for canoes, kayaks, inflatable boats and SUP boards. Unlike the trail and viewpoint, it is an activity on the water. Water levels and river conditions can affect safe use, so check the current conditions before setting off and follow the equipment advice.
Altötting as the wider travel destination
The Altötting district, within the wider travel destination of Altötting, lies between the Inn and Salzach rivers. The landscape is characterised by a plain about 10 kilometres wide, through which the Inn flows; lush green hilly countryside borders it to the north and south.
The Dachlwand am Inn nature reserve lies northwest of Marktl and includes parts of the municipalities of Marktl, Erlbach and Perach. It covers about 206 hectares and was converted from a landscape conservation area into a nature reserve in 1986. The internationally significant wetland and nature reserve “Lower Inn between Haiming and Neuhaus” provides a habitat for migrating, overwintering and breeding marsh and water birds. More than 25 different bird species dependent on aquatic and wetland habitats breed there.
The wider travel destination of Altötting also offers points of interest in cultural history: the octagon of the Chapel of Grace probably dates to around the year 700 and is considered probably Germany’s oldest central-plan building. The Golden Steed in the Altötting Treasury was made in the Paris court workshops in 1404.
Together with Mühldorf district, Altötting district is part of the Inn-Salzach tourism region. Visitor information for the region includes cycling and pilgrimage routes, museums and bathing lakes. A popular variation of the Inn Cycle Path runs from Neuötting through Altötting and the extensive Öttinger Forst forest to the ducal town of Burghausen, and then past the confluence of the Inn and Salzach rivers to Marktl. The section in the Inn-Salzach region is just over 75 kilometres long; current diversions may apply. Check the route before setting out on a cycling trip.
