Burghausen combines a 1,051-meter-long castle complex, a listed old town in the Inn-Salzach style, and nature activities at Wöhrsee Lake. Two easy hiking and walking routes can be compared by how long they take: the “Enchanting Natural Oases in the Heart of the City” route takes 53 minutes, while the Burghausen Panorama Trail takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. Museums, the old town and the lake add culture and seasonal activities to the choice of routes.

Castle, Museums and Old Town

The State Castle Museum is located in the palas of Burghausen Castle. Visitors can explore the medieval living quarters of the dukes of Lower Bavaria. The Town Museum presents the history of the city of Burghausen. The House of Photography offers a different perspective, with changing special exhibitions on contemporary photography. Burghausen’s museums present their subjects in a modern way and offer activity programs for children and opportunities to interact; individual programs may change.

The listed old town is considered a model example of the Inn-Salzach style. Its characteristic features include projecting façades, concealed roofs, fire lanes and continuous building frontage. Colorful gabled houses with Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo façades line the town square.

The Grüben is a pedestrian zone, a street of craftspeople, and a meeting place for culture and cabaret. Small shops, event stages, cafés and the Street of Fame, dedicated to international jazz legends, define this area. Individual businesses and event programs may change.

Easy Trails and Nature at Wöhrsee Lake

The easy “Enchanting Natural Oases in the Heart of the City” route is 3.1 kilometers long and takes 53 minutes. It starts and ends at the parking lot by the Pulverturm. The Burghausen Panorama Trail is also easy: it covers 3.4 kilometers, takes 1 hour and 45 minutes, and starts at the castle entrance. The Natural Oases route therefore returns to its starting point; the Panorama Trail’s starting point is at the castle. The estimated times can help you choose between a shorter and a longer route.

A 92-hectare landscape conservation area in Burghausen includes the Herzogsbad and the long, narrow Wöhrsee Lake. In summer, the lake offers swimming and boating; when the water freezes, ice skating and Bavarian curling are possible. There are also opportunities for walking and jogging around Wöhrsee Lake. Water and ice conditions vary. Check in advance that conditions are suitable for your planned activity.

At the Herzogsbad, a spring rich in lime and minerals still flows today. It is used as a Kneipp arm bath to refresh and invigorate.

Practical Extras

For those traveling by bicycle, eleven bike lockers protected from wind and weather are located at the entrance to the Stadtsaal building, centrally situated on the town square. They can be used free of charge to store valuables; a bicycle repair stand is located right next to them.

The interactive GPS city tour “Jazz in Burghausen” brings the city’s jazz history to life with music and anecdotes about jazz stars. Booking and technical availability may change; check in advance.
