From Bürgelrain, the view stretches across Dogern and the High Rhine landscape; the hill is also known as “Kreuzberg.” St. Clemens adds a precisely dated church history and an extensive collection of images to the landscape setting. Together with the church consecration festival, cycle path and smaller hiking and walking trails, these offer various ways to explore Dogern.

Getting here and finding your way

Dogern station is on the High Rhine Railway between Singen and Basel. This is a specific point of reference if you are travelling by train; check the connections and timetable for your travel date. When planning the rest of your trip, you can then decide whether views, local history or outdoor activities should be the focus of your stay.

Bürgelrain and paths along the High Rhine

Bürgelrain is Dogern’s local hill. The cross on the hill explains the name “Kreuzberg”; from there, you can enjoy sweeping views across Dogern and the High Rhine landscape. Views and a clearly named place are therefore at the heart of getting to know Dogern from its scenic side.

Bürgelrain can also be reached via the Liederbachtal valley. After descending, the Trottenweg leads back to Dogern north of the railway line. For navigation, you can plan the approach through the valley and the described return route as separate sections. Check the path conditions locally before setting out.

Cycling, hiking and walking

An 800-metre section of cycle path between Dogern and the Dogern-Schnöt industrial area was completed in December 2023. In Dogern, it extends the existing section of cycle path between Hauenstein and the Waldshut customs post. This makes it possible to place the section, with its specific endpoints, within the local cycle route network.

There are many smaller hiking and walking trails around Dogern, in the neighbouring Southern Black Forest and in neighbouring Switzerland. The options therefore vary in geographic scope: the cycle path is a named 800-metre section, while the walking trails cover several landscapes. Check the conditions on the specific trail when choosing your route.

St. Clemens and its collection of images

The parish church of St. Clemens in Dogern was consecrated on 19 July 1775 by Baron von Hornstein, Auxiliary Bishop of Constance. Ceiling paintings depict the martyrdoms of St. Clement and St. Sebastian; the ceiling in the sanctuary shows Jesus with the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Further paintings by Gotthard Hilzinger are located on the high altar and the two side altars. The subjects and their distribution across different parts of the church offer another way to explore it, alongside its consecration year.

Church consecration festival and historical connections

In Dogern, the church consecration festival is celebrated every year on a Sunday around 19 July. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the exact festival date in advance. Two details should be distinguished when considering the timing: St. Clemens was consecrated on 19 July 1775; the recurring festival is celebrated on a Sunday around 19 July. One date marks the historical consecration, while the other is the date of the local celebration.

The town twinning between Dogern and Le Grand-Lemps also has a specific historical background. Among the early initiatives that laid its foundations were learning each other’s languages, private contacts and cycle tours from Dogern to Le Grand-Lemps. The partnership thus complements the church and festival history with the relationship between the two towns.
