When looking for a hotel in Motz, you can start by choosing according to the kind of day you have planned: a vineyard trail, a high-altitude route, birdwatching, or visits related to wine and spirulina. The routes differ in length, elevation gain and landscape; the visits focus on tastings and insights into how the products are made.

Vineyard trail or high-altitude route?

The Sentier des vignes starts at the car park by the Motz cemetery. This themed trail runs for three kilometres through the vineyard slopes. The Sentier de Barvy is also three kilometres long; it has an elevation gain of 246 metres and a stated duration of one hour and 30 minutes. From the heights of Motz, it offers views of the Rhône Valley, the course of the Rhône and its confluence with the Fier.

The same distance makes for a straightforward comparison without making the routes equivalent: the Sentier de Barvy also has an elevation gain, a stated duration and views, while the Sentier des vignes is described as a themed trail through the vineyard slopes. When planning your day, you can weigh up whether the vineyard theme or the high-altitude route, with its specifically stated planning details, is a better fit.

Birdwatching and the riverbank

The Sentier ornithologique du Fier is 2.5 kilometres long and has been awarded the “Promenade Confort” label. It runs along the Rhône riverbank on an almost flat, shaded route. The trail includes a viewing screen, an observatory and ten information panels. Its length and route profile offer a different point of reference from the two trails, each three kilometres long: here, the riverbank and birdwatching define the outing.

A separate nature highlight is the reed bed at the Chautagne reservoir. Migratory birds find rest, shelter and food there.

Other route options

The GR 65 Way of St James passes through the Espace Sport et Nature du Fier de Motz. If you plan to take this route, check the trail conditions before setting out. The signposted ViaRhôna is another distinct route option: it runs along the Rhône from Seyssel for three kilometres in the direction of Motz and can be used for cycling, inline skating and hiking. Before a bike ride, check the surface and traffic conditions.

Visits centred on wine and spirulina

At Domaine de Véronnet, the winery offers an insight into different grape varieties, with tastings of Mondeuse, Roussette and other wines. If you plan a visit, check the available arrangements before your trip.

Étoile Verte offers free tours without a reservation. They explain how spirulina is cultivated, from the pond to the plate. Check the latest visitor and opening information before your visit. Together, the two offerings showcase different sides of food and drink: at Véronnet, grape varieties and wine tastings take centre stage; at Étoile Verte, the journey of spirulina from cultivation to the plate.

Adventure courses

The Tyroliennes du Fier includes several adventure courses among the trees. These include the Parcours Pirate for younger visitors, as well as a 100-metre water zip line to Île aux castors. Before your trip, check which courses are available and what the course layout is like. This lets you treat the experience as a separate activity, rather than conflating it with the hiking and observation trails.
