In Villié-Morgon, hikes of varying lengths and a long history of winegrowing can be combined in one stay. The hike at Côte du Py offers 360-degree views across the Beaujolais crus. Together, the routes, views and historic sites offer different starting points for planning: you can focus on exercise, wine culture or both.

Hiking trails of varying lengths

The hiking trail network in Villié-Morgon includes four short loops and more challenging routes of 8, 14, 20 and 25 kilometres. Within this more challenging selection, 8 kilometres is the shortest and 25 kilometres the longest stated distance; 14 and 20 kilometres fall in between. This makes distance a concrete factor to compare when planning, while the short loops form a separate category.

The Circuit du Chêne is 14 kilometres long and combines impressive scenery with local heritage. This makes the route a clear choice if you want to enjoy both nature and culture on the same hike. The hikes offered by Chemins & Racines are open to everyone. Les sentiers du Gaulois starts at Place de l’église, where parking is available on site; local parking regulations may change.

Winegrowing and history

The geographical area of the Morgon appellation comprises only the commune of Villié-Morgon in the Rhône department. The Morgon winegrowing area extends around the Côte du Py hill. A document from 956 records winegrowing through the sale of a plot of land by the Sire de Beaujeu to a vassal. This places the geographical boundaries of the appellation alongside a specific historical reference point.

In 1953, producers set up a tasting cellar at Château de Fontcrenne. The château is listed as a historic monument. The document from 956 and the establishment of the cellar in 1953 mark different milestones in the history of winegrowing.

The Caveau de Morgon is located in a late 17th-century château set within a wildlife park. Morgon wines are sold and available for tasting on site. Other Beaujolais appellations are also available, along with regional products such as Jacoulot liqueurs, honey, jams and oils. The selection may vary, and opening arrangements may change. Park and botanical discovery trail

Château Bellevue is surrounded by a park with two-hundred-year-old trees and various kinds of flowers. You can explore a botanical discovery trail there independently, using a visitor brochure. Unlike the hikes with stated kilometre distances, the focus here is on botanical discovery. If you plan to visit the trail, check the latest visitor information beforehand.
