Villard-Reculas offers a wide variety of experiences: a chairlift connects the village directly to the Espace Alpe d’Huez ski area, while trails bring the village’s landscape and history into focus. There is also goat’s cheese and the opportunity to visit a local farm. You can tailor your stay to winter sports, hiking, local history or regional products.
Mountain Scenery and Panoramic Route
Villard-Reculas lies on the sun-drenched terraces of the Massif des Grandes Rousses, between forests and mountain pastures. From here, you can enjoy views of the Oisans peaks. The historic Pas de la Confession road is also part of the landscape experience: it runs between the cliff face and the mountain and is one of the Oisans’ emblematic routes. Designated as a panoramic route, it can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by car, subject to local conditions.
Skiing in Villard-Reculas
The Villarais chairlift provides a direct connection from Villard-Reculas to the entire Espace Alpe d’Huez ski area. The Villard-Reculas sector has 20 kilometres of pistes and eight lifts; the entire ski area covers 250 kilometres of pistes. These figures distinguish the local sector from the larger ski area. As operating details may change seasonally, check the latest lift information before travelling.
Choose Hiking Trails to Suit Your Interests
For families, the marked Sentier découverte de Villard-Reculas, described as easy, is one way to explore the surrounding area and its themes of nature, traditions and pastoral life. Trail conditions may vary by season. Also designed to help families discover the village is the permanent Parcours d’orientation patrimoine naturel, which is open year-round. Check local seasonal access information.
Other routes each have their own focus. The Sentier géologique uses information panels to introduce the geology of the Oisans. It is accessible year-round, weather permitting; in winter, the route is not groomed. The Boucle des lacs can be adapted using mountain lifts and leads to five high-altitude lakes. On the Sentier de la Croix, the path passes through the picturesque lanes of the old village, crosses a slate ridge and runs through a conifer forest to a plateau. There, it offers a special panorama of the Taillefer massif and the Prégentil cliff face.
Trail running also has a local base: the Station de Trail® de l’Oisans base opened in 2013. From Villard-Reculas, an extensive network of marked trails offers routes for all ability levels.
Village History and Mountain Farming Heritage
Stone-and-wood chalets scattered across the mountain pastures and traditional buildings in the old village shape Villard-Reculas’s mountain farming character. The village’s history also includes specific landmarks: the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was rebuilt after a fire in 1757. The Canal des Sarrazins is still functional and is considered a local monument. Together, these examples show different aspects of the local heritage—both historic buildings and a structure that remains in use.
Goat’s Cheese and a Farm Visit
La Chèvre…rie’s farm shop sells cheese; the farm also offers the chance to meet the goats. The milk from the Alpine goats is made on site into goat’s tomme, fresh, semi-fresh, semi-dry and dry goat’s cheese, as well as goat’s raclette. If you would like to learn more about the farm, individual guided tours are available on request. Individual tastings are free of charge.
