Vénosc combines local history with a variety of trails and mountain sports options. A cultural heritage trail highlights chapels, the Château de la Muzelle, the town hall, the school and sundials. Other trails showcase natural heritage and the history of slate quarrying. There are also hikes starting from Vénosc and sporting activities with specific information on duration, difficulty or access. These differences can help you plan your stay around your interests.

Location and connection to Les Deux Alpes

Vénosc lies at an altitude of 960 metres at the foot of the Parc national des Écrins, in the Vénéon Valley. Access is via the D1091 departmental road. The Télécabine de Venosc connects the village to the centre of the Les Deux Alpes ski resort, at an altitude of 1,650 metres, in less than seven minutes. The different elevations and the cable car connection are useful reference points when planning your trip. If you plan to use the connection, check the timetable for your travel dates.

The tourist information office in Vénosc provides information about hikes, events and cultural tours. It is a place to find out about these options while you are there. Check event dates and the availability of guided tours in light of your planned stay.

Cultural trails, the church and slate history

The cultural heritage trail highlights various village buildings and features: chapels, the Château de la Muzelle, the town hall, the school and sundials. A natural heritage trail takes a different approach. It explains Vénosc’s volcanic origins through a basalt flow and also covers the Brèche de Venosc, a rare oak grove, charcoal, the use of hemp and local flora. The trails thus bring together architectural and local history with geological, botanical and historical economic themes.

Slate extraction and working can also be explored along a trail featuring information panels and accounts from eyewitnesses. Remains of the slate quarries are still visible at Alpe de Venosc; the quarries were in operation until the 1960s. The church of Saint-Pierre adds architectural and art history to these historical themes: it is a Romanesque church dating from the 9th century, which was later modified and extended. Its Baroque altarpiece dates from the 17th century. The bell tower houses the oldest bell found in Oisans, dating from 1622.

The artisan shops and workshops in Vénosc offer demonstrations of their savoir-faire as well as creative workshops. A guided tour of the village and its surroundings, lasting about two hours, is also available. If you would like to plan a workshop or a tour, ask what is available for your travel dates.

Hiking and mountain sports

The hike to Lac et refuge de la Muzelle starts in Vénosc. Another option is the Via ferrata des Perrons, which also starts in Vénosc. It can be reached from the Télécabine de Venosc car park via a 45-minute walk. The via ferrata is listed as taking four hours, with a difficulty rating of D and an ascent of 500 metres. These details provide useful guidance for planning your time and route.

The Vénosc mountain biking trail in the Les Deux Alpes Bike Park offers a different kind of activity: a fast, technical descent through slate quarry terrain and forest, accessed via the Télécabine de Venosc. The options therefore differ considerably by activity: hiking, via ferrata and mountain biking each offer a distinct focus. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these aspects of the area you want to shape your trip, and whether the connection to the centre of Les Deux Alpes fits into your plans.
